Doesn't sound like piston slap to me. Almost like metal to metal contact, but I can't really tell because of the sound quality.

iMovie scales it down to it's own size, i can probably do an mp3 or a better version.

anyone else?

do you have adj cam gears? check them . the adjustable bolts may have come loose. thats what it sounded when mine did. but mine was a bit louder. when i gave it gas it would go away.

After listening a couple times you can hear a CLANK CLANK. That sounds pretty damn bad...I'm curious what others will say. If you guys can't hear anything the first time...listen again, about half way through you hear a CLANK CLANK.

Yea, that's not piston slap... Sounds like the idle dies down when it makes the sound as well.

Ouch.... Pull of the oil pan...take a look and see if there is anything out of the sorts. I had a old Suzuki samurai that had a cam main screw come off and it got chewed by the cams. Made a lot of noise, but only around the start up. I would get caught in a oil return, until the engine would shut off, then it would fall back into the cams for the next start up. Finally found it in the oil pan one day after it was so small it could fit in the return

You know what, it may be a broken a lost motion piece in the vtec assembly. may be a different name for it, but that may be what is causing the noise

ouch.
I guess i can pop off the valve cover and check it out, but anything more's going to have to wait.

doesn't seem possible for a valve to be hitting a piston, but it sounds like it's coming from the bottom of the head.

what's the long term damage to the head/block gonna be if it's from the lma?

dont' worry, your valve is not hitting your piston. If it was, there would have been a lot more noise, and then none at all.

Just a thought, try unplugging the VTEC (green/yellow wire, single wire plug). Sounds just like a friends car that had a bad ecu and VTEC was trying to activate at idel. Not saying thats your problem, but if the noise goes away, it could piont to a problem in the rocker arms or a oil pressure problem in the head. Just an idea.

84mm JE pistons
crower rods
Darton MID sleeves
Ferrea valvetrain
stock cams
Toda timing belt/gears
gonna pop off the valve cover and see if there are any problems/damage

je's slap til its wrmed up usually. i hear 2 sounds in the vid, 1 is crazy valvetrain noise. the other is a slap sound every once in a while. maybee im wrong about the sounds. however the slapping sound sounds like piston slap, typical je sound. if it goes away when it warms up then thats most likely what it is. how long has it been built.

What head are you using and what piston's,cause from my own testing i know that JE pistons and gsr do not get along. So if ure using aftermarket je's and application is for b16a do not use them cause they hit the combustion cambers(square part)

b18cx, your right! the problems (so far) disappear if vtec wire is disconnected
visual inspection under valve cover shows no unusual wear
but i'm thinking it's some sort of misfire causing piston slap
and odd idle

i'm using a vafc with hack too so it can't be the ecu causing the vtec to come on
i'll double check wiring just in case.

JE 9:1 pistons on a GS-R setup

why do the JE's hit the combustion chamber, you're the first person i'v heard say that.
i also have the cometic turbo head gasket.
that just sucks man, but yes, it's the 84mm for use with b20 block w/ b16 head.

With the car on and the motor off, if you unplug the VTEC solinoid and then plug it back up, do you hear the solinoid "click" . If so, definately an electrical problem. If you dont, then it sounds like a bad VTEC ssolinoid.

The pictular car I was working on was deffinately ecu. I would leave the Vafc hooked up, but wire the Vtec back to stock to see if its the ecu or the Vafc.
