PIECING A TURBO FOR LS
hey just wanna know how much would it cost for me to piece a turbo for my b18b? need advice what brand of turbo parts should i get? and all the parts that i need? my motor is all stock except for acl rod bearing.. and im not really looking for a high hp maybe around 220-260 hp.
A good turbo kit from the main sponsors here. Make sure that your engine is in good mechanical condition. The stock engine (well-tuned) will easily hold that power. No need for turbo cams or anything of the like.
A gabillion and one postings on LS turbos...

Ummm. that's up to you, but you will spend double the amount in repairing that e-bay kit after it dies. Have a budget of about 2800-3500 ready to go for a kit that has EVERYTHING. If you don't know what it takes to "piece it together", then don't. Plain and simple. Check out Spoolin performance, AFI, Peakboost (you can even google these names if needed) and understand what is included in such a kit.
You also may want to check the FAQs at the top of this forum to know what exactly is involved. Again, if this is your first kit, it is best to let the professionals install it. Since you're in IL, this shouldn't be hard.
Here are the bare bones basics of components - Have a power goal, and be prepared to spend a little more than budget for the little things. Make sure that the engine is mechanically sound.
Turbocharger - No E-bay
Intercooler - not from a used OEM application
oil feed / return lines w/ appropriate fittings
exhaust manifold
Blow off valve
Wastegate
Engine management
Larger injectors
Intercooler piping
Downpipe (make sure it matches the same company as the exhaust manifold you purchase, as well as a dumptube to route excess exhaust gas.)
Uprated clutch
Money to tune the car w/ the engine management

Most kits will not come with the following that you will need for your build, as these are customer preferences on any kit.
-Fuel Pump
-Injectors
-injector clips
-ECU
-Engine Management
The only straight OBD2 systems that can be used are the following:
Power FC - (hard to find people to tune it)
E-manage - (Same reason as above)
Unichip - (mainly used in Ohio- good resolution)
ECTune??? - Someone please verify this.
For 250-300whp, this isn't hard to obtain.
I started piecing my kit together last winter and in the end I wished I would have bought a whole kit and just been done with it. I didn't save any money, and ended up buying several manifolds and downpipes before I found one I liked and fit properly. If you do piece one together I would suggest buying a manifold, downpipe and dump tube as a set.
v8Killaz: but unlike the OP, you knew exactly what you needed to get to piece together. For a first time FI person, there is nothing wrong with getting the kit as a whole, and understanding the parts needed as they go along. It's worth the extra bucks for the Time and Energy that one saves.

internets a great thing you know
but you know what it would be alot easier to go with a kit then. but you still need engine management and thats whats goijg to cost you
Understood, but the "internets" can only take you so far in understanding it all. The rest has to be exposure, experience, and expertise to have it in the same reliable condition that he's looking for. The motor city gives you an advantage (or anyone else that lives that for that matter thanks to automotive osmosis ;-) ) but its not like that for everyone.
TheShodan where u located here in illinois? but anyways ryt now im still not done with my swap. im doin b18b obd1 to my 00 ex coupe and i still need tranny and dizzy.. im thinking of running a turbo later on.. maybe u can help me out SHODAN if you dont live that far from me!
^^^ project dc2/spoolin performance made me the downpipe for my setup. Looks great and not a bad price either for the quality.
I have 3,000 in my kit. That's including everything possible to turbo the car plus the stuff that usually does not come with a kit. Like boost controller, boost gauge, clutch, injectors and resistor box. All turbo parts,piping,couplers/clamps,dyno time,clutch,3" exhaust ect ect. Also I bought all name brand high quality parts. I also did all the fab work to make my charge pipes and exhaust. So if you can't weld then you have to pay someone to do that for you. So you have to factor that into the cost. From stock ls to boosted ls able to be driven everyday was 3k. Hope this helps
