Default PCV catch can causes engine to smoke

I just tinkered around and installed a PCV catch can on my HMT setup---this caused my car to smoke like a *****---I took the catch can out and reinstalled my little filter and the pcv valve back onto the manifold and it stopped--I understand white smoke=water inside pistons but what caused the heavy white smoke when I had the catch can? Why doesn't it smoke when routed back to stock?
any thoughts appreciated thanks!

I may be wrong here, but I think the catch can is ONLY supposed to be used for the crankcase vent (filter breather) NOT the PCV.
