Painting intercooler piping
I had some intercooler piping made for my set up and have it sitting in my room waiting. I checked it out a couple of days ago and noticed that it was starting to rust already. I asked a few people and they said that painting it would stop that. I was just wondering if there are any special preps i have to do before painting the piping or not. I was going to go with that high heat engine paint stuff..... should that do the trick. Any info would be helpful..... especially from people who have done this before. Thanks.
what would high temp paint do for you? You need a rust inhibitor like primer, THEN coat it with some other paint. Sand that **** down and hope it didn't go all the way through. If so, time for new pipes cuz you'll just be borrowing time patching **** that should have been replaced a long time ago.
the piping just started to rust so i know its still good. ill be sure to sand it down still though..... prime it.... then paint it.... is that correct? also..... would getting it powder coated be better? thanks.
i actually used rustoleum high temp. barbeque/grill paint. i love flat black to begin with, so this was perfect for me. i sanded the pipes with a relatively rough grit to get the surface roughed up, then put a few coats on-wiped off the loose paint and put another coat on. here is what the final product looked like. not perfect, but fine for the cost of a can of spray paint

edit: dont mind the greasy fingerprints on the pipes

Why is it rusting? Whats the piping made out of? My intake on my n/a motor is aluminum I think and no rust obviously, so is turbo motor piping just metal?
Sorry just confuse cause I am going turbo soon and dont want to worry about rust

i had custom pipes welded from JCwhitney, and I just used some Duplicolor wheel paint to make sure the welds wouldn't rust. I prepped them w/ scotchbrite pads, cleaned it w/ rubbing alcohol, and then hung it on a clothes hanger from a tree branch and sprayed all around. good luck
thanks for all the helpful responses. i guess im on my way to get some sandpaper and paint. the inside of the piping is fine.... just the outside is bad for some reason. i have aluminumized piping for the person who asked what kinda metal the pipes are. i live in south texas on the coast, so rusting isnt a strange thing here. perhaps once i get the coated with some paint i wont have to worry about this anymore. thanks again to everyone who helped.
I only painted the pipe coming off the compressor with high temp paint. The rest are rustoleum flat black and the upper charge pipe (the one you can see) has been sanded, metal glazed, PPG black, and Omni Clear Coated. Bling y0!
