painted intercooler or not
I think i fell asleep that day because i didnt know that, i always thought that it would trap more heat due to paint being on the metal, so any black will do?? just reg flat black?? from your local autozone?
Here's the answer.
Heat and Mass Transfer: A Practical Approach 3rd Edition by Yunus Cengel
Page 28 Table 1-6
Emissivities of some materials at 300K
Anodized Aluminum 0.82
Polished Stainless Steel 0.17
Black Paint 0.98
White Paint 0.90
The higher the emissivity the greater the heat transfer so black paint would result in the greatest heat transfer.
edit: Although this is just for radiation heat transfer. The paint may actually make the pipes smoother resulting in less convective heat transfer (since turbulent flow results in better cooling). Experiments would probably be necessary. Someone who is thinking about painting their intercooler black should stick a thermocouple at the exit of the intercooler and measure the difference in temperatures after the intercooler is painted.

im planning on painting my intercooler black soon (soon as i get my engine tuned) so i'll get a couple thermo couplers before i do and measure at the entrance and exit of the intercooler before and after i paint it so i can measure the difference. i'll post a thread as soon as i do. HOPEFULLY the wind and temperatures will be close enough to get an accurate reading, unless i can find a dyno shop willing to let me do 2 runs for free to get a more accurate measurement
Any Flat Black paint will work... Ahh yes thinking backwe did an experiment too. Took two identical aluminum soup cans and painted one black with dirt cheap spray paint. Then heated them up several different ways, i.e.: boiling water, bunsen burner, and the sun. In all tests the black took on heat and dissipated heat much quicker than the shiny surface. So if you painted it black and used air speed (we just let them air cool) it would accelerate the black paint heat transfer while I would assume the shiny would have a much less exponential rate of heat change/ transfer.
@@@ Sorry if that don't make sense I am on my phone... LoL @@@

I would say nothing because now you are dealing with exhaust temperature from the turbine and heat soak is a b!tch... Also you don't want your compressor to heat up due to possible faster heat transfer.
Heres mine..89 Sedan stock exhaust,Stock height.. everything exterior wise stock with blacked out intercooler...I love it,fools them everytime.
Edit:Its a turboed B18a btw.

well if you wanna keep spending money on a painted intercooler and time on doing it then go ahead. everyone has there own likes. sounds alright to me but id rather not deal with it and save the money for sumthn else.
you meaning repaint or just restore back ?

i have , the car was 100% stock exterior and interior just had a shiny intercooler had it for 2 years and was stolen within 2 months after it was boosted .
Next time, I'm going with the stealth look.
If you have to look at the intercooler to remind you it is boosted then you must not have your turbo setup correctly done or you are just not running enough boost...
