Default Open dump tube - pros and cons ?

Well I heard many mixed opinions about having a open loop dump tube and I am currently running open but the thing is crazy loud when boost kicks and even though I will not be going that fast, people start moving to the side, etc. because it sounds like the motor is redlining at 10k rpm and yet I will only be at around 5k rpm!!

Considering going closed loop like into the downpipe BUT will I lose alot of power or will it still be crazy loud?

You might run into boost creep issues if your exhaust is not big enough.

burnsstainless makes 2" mufflers.

Pros:
Great w/ boost control to help w/ response.
Sounds evil as all hell

Cons:
If not cut to the right spot, can ruin a radiator or other piece of equipment.
Exhaust smoke can get into the cabin - (for those w/ girlfriends, this is a way NOT to get sex that night)

I went from an open tube to this

Doesn’t seem to have been any ill affects, power is more than sufficient to not notice any real loss.
Obviously, it’s quiet compared to an open tube, doesn’t attract unwanted attention (Police), I’m able to hear the engine now so I can pick up on anything untoward.
Makes no difference on track with a helmet but my car see’s the road more than track.

lol... so true

All jokes aside. I was actually told that by running a closed dumptube you can get away with running lower boost levels then when it is open. I'm having trouble running less than 13psi on my 3076r setup and have debated welding it back into my downpipe.

Is that a bung for the positive crankcase pressure to attach to just before your flexpipe?

Yes it a 45° slash cut and it works great, I don't use the port for the O2 closest to the maifold, that's blanked off.

I have mine plumbed out. sounds retarded . When i had it at the left front wheel my interier head liner would get black sout on it. I now have it under my oil pan beside the flex, in the car got quieter but all the boys say its loud. The sut has stopped also but i do get some sut in the door jams after a good night or roll ons.

Someone years ago did a test. Plumbing it in on a 400whp car yeilded a 25whp lost. Guy in MTL here flanged a section at the flex and had pimp cain to the bottom of the oil pan then did 3 runs open and 3 plumbed back lost 18-20whp. this was on a 300ish whp car

I love the way that came out. I have been thinking of converting open dump setup to a recirculated dump as well. I don't think that I will lose much if any power by doing that. Just to keep the car quiet is worth a few HP loss to me anyday.

If you loose any power its really not enough to notice.

if you run the dump way back in the exhause like that you wont really loose much, all it basicly does is make for an effectivly smaller exhaust so it will cost you a little power. we like to put a flex pipe in the dump when its recirc'd like that to make it easier to get the wg on and off

You can’t really see in that picture but the first 6 inches of the waste gate tube is double skinned to create a slip joint, release the v-band from the wg and it swivels and pulls straight out with ease, no leaks either.
This little lot fits in the CRX, was made on the car, all 3 inch from the turbo, sounds ok too.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the open dump tube but all the tracks (circuit) in the Uk have a noise limit now, having an open dump and vtec just doesn’t pass the drive by test limit and I get black flagged, had to compromise.

I prefer recirculated dumps, although I don't like loud cars much at all. I'm actually about to go out to the garage and weld on the recirc tube, including a 1.875" flex pipe. They're cheap at $10-15 each now.

I assume you are talking about the exhaust gas from the dump tube re-entering the intake system via the turbo or such? If so, I just routed the dump tube a little under the oilpan so it is facing the back of the car and also my turbo inlet has a short intake type pipe with an airfilter on it - this has worked great for me so far and I do not think I am gettin the "EGR effect"
