Default oil pump concerns

I just did a rebuild a week and a half ago, which was basdically new bearings. I did a swap between my two integras and when putting the built engine into the new car I forgot to put the oil filter on the relocated mount and the car was started and run for about 10 seconds. Took the engine back out and examined everything and replaced all of the bearings with new ones. Crank and journals all looked fine.

Since then everything has been running pretty much fine, no oil starvation problems that I know off. Within the last couple days it started making a sound similar to the sound it made after my first incident (once I got the filter on and ran the car, it mas making an odd sound from the bottom end). When it first started making the sound it was very intermintent. Like from idle I reved it up to 3 grand, it would make the sound when you let off the gas. Know it's doing it a lot whenever it is above 2500 rpm. Today I went for a drive and I noticed the oil pressure was staying pretty constant, around 20-25 psi. It was not increasing with the RPM at all. It would go up a little from idle but only a few pounds. I drove it home as slowly as I could to keep the RPM as low as possibile since it was only getting 25 psi.

Any ideas what could cause this. It's not losing oil at all, so I can't imagine it being anything other than the oil pump.

Make sure your oil pickup is open and not plugged or make sure your pan didnt get bent in so it cant get oil. Also...did you use the pickup gasket between the pickup and pump? .....Mike

excellent suggestions. Also be sure to check your oil pump spins freely, and make sure you have the O ring installed in the head underneath the cam caps. Failure to do this can cause oil pressure problems.

You may also want to check for proper operation of the oil squirters.

This all happened after I had the oil pan and pump off a couple days ago to change the main crank seal. Definately seems like I just missed something when reinstalling it, though it didn't seem to spin very freely. I'm not really sure how smooth it should be. I had someone take look at it when I most recently rebuilt the motor and was told it was fine.

I just don't see how it is the bearings making this sound. The first time this happened I got the bearings out and they were defintately scored, but certainly not horribile. But the sound it was making went away after changing them. Thus it makes me think it has to be the bearings again.

Yes they do have oil squirters. Another thing that is odd is during my last rebuid, when I took the pan off there was a small curved piece of mashed up metal in the pan. Turns out it was one of the oil squirters. Bolt was still in place, the jet somehow broke off. No idea how it could have broken off, don't see how it could have been hit by anything. My guess it when they were reinstalled the bolt was put in to tight and it just broke on it's own.

Oil pump seemed great in every aspect - any other thoughts on what the problem could be? It's not leaking oil out of the engine at all. There was antifreeze mixed in the oil I drained out. No oil in the antifreeze drained from the radiator. The water pump was bad - it didn't turn very freely at all and sounded horribile turning. I think that was what was making all of the noises I heard.

Just an update on what had happened: oil pump was fine, water pump was bad. Replaced the water pump and the sounds it was making went away. Still had low oil pressure, turned out it was the oil filter completely plugged up. Changed that and things have been fine.

There was quite a bit of coolant in the oil. After getting everything fixed I have not noticed any contaimination. Don't see how it's possibile that a bad water pump could let coolant into the oil. Not sure how else it could have happened though.

i think i am having the same problem and i have it narrowed down to the water pump, but i am too lazy to change it because it is 105+ on the heat index. can you describe the sound you were getting? mine is mild only heard at idle to 1500 rpm though and then it's gone.

Mine started out very mild. If you revved it up to about 3 grand from idle, you could hear pretty loud when you let off the gas. Right before I replaced it it was making the sound constantly. No real pattern to it, just a loud knocking/rattaling sound. Can't really describe it.

wassup with oil pumps. I just came back in from the grage putting a new oil pump on the ride. What a pain in the ***. Hopefully i get oil pressure again. I was getting a loud squeeking noise from the head do to oil starvation. Cam rockers were just frictioning against the cam #2.

I hope no one else has oil pump probs. Funny thing i took this oil pump which had 1700 miles on it and it looked brand new still. B18A1 with OEM pump. A buddy of mine gave me another one from a B20 hope it puts oil in the head.
