OIL FOR LOW BOOSTED 2000 SI
hey guys i have 00 si...running low boost (that's a garrett t3/t4 ball bearing turbo) on a pretty much stock b16...my constant oil pressure is between 80 - 85 psi on WOT am currently using Castrol 20W50 not synthetic just regular oil...i see my ideal oil pressure within couple minutes of switching on the engine (oil changes have been done every 2500, 2800 the most)....now i wana go full-synthetic what are the suggestions?? Should I even go full synthetic.....do i need to?? Let me know whats up?? thanks!!

Re: OIL FOR LOW BOOSTED 2000 SI
why are you running such thick oil? With stock bearing clearances, run the factory recommended oil weight. I personally use Shell Rotella T6 synthetic 5W-40 in my turbo prelude
PS. oil pressure is RPM dependent, it has nothing to do with throttle position

They run these weights because of the fact that they are so good to the thrust bearings of the turbo. Quite a few use a Brad Penn, Valvoline VR-1 non-street oil, or Castrol are the best to use at those weights.
For this OP, however, doesn't need ANY of that. Stick with the 10w-30 Synthetic Pennzoil, Castrol (Full syn),or Amsoil, you'll be fine.

I know you're trying to be thorough but this is borderline Obsessive behaviour.

I've been using Rotella 15-40 on my stock b16a2 with journal bearing PTE5431 for about 10k miles now. Doesnt burn as much as it did when I ran Mobil1 Synthetic 5-30

LOL this is a diesel oil and has special additives for diesel engines. I would not run that in my Honda. A bit on the thick side as well.

Which if anything would be a good thing as diesel oil is designed for real hard wear and tear. That is providing the correct grade is used.

while that isn't exactly "wrong" about syn, one of the biggest benefits to syn is its excellent cold flow. the majority of wear happens on start up and syn will flow faster cold. it also doesn't sludge with typical changes and can operate at higher temps before breakdown. many race cars have pushed 300deg oil tepms with redline without the oil breaking down. plain petro oil would be done for at 300deg

Which is why it is good for Honda motors and DOHC motors. The oil will flow up to the head and cams better under a cold start and hold up better under high rpms and heat.

ok bro....but why you say 15w40 is not the correct for honda...i know honda recommends 5w30w or something like that but uuuhhmm taking into account my current setup mentioned initially above what would be the best oil (i know synthetic) for me to use in terms of weight and why?? Thanks!

ok understood but what about the turbo it's a garrett ball bearing t3/t4...and the engine has over 75000 miles on it i don't know if has anything to do with it...am in florida temperatures here are not too bad..so taking into consideration all those factors...what u tink?
