Default oil cooler question

ok, so i see the itr oil coolers for sale and i'm wondering how well they work? I'm speaking about the oem one that uses water to cool the oil. I plan on building another ls/vtec turbo and since we all know ls/vtec doesn't have oil squirters i figure maybe an oil cooler will help it out? also, if it doesn't work all that well, would it be better to just run an oil cooler that has the an fittings, kinda like a radiator? and just run oil lines to and from it? one more question... Would running the oem itr oil cooler be better off i ran the feed and return line from the bottom of an automatic radiator since it has tranny cooler ports on them? i was just wondering today, and i'm sure someone on this forum can point me in the right direction. thanks in advance!

I'm not speaking from facts or experience but merely from logic reasoning. ITR oil coolers use water to cool the oil down. The water being at 150+ F. constant. Aftermarket oil coolers utilize air to cool the oil down. Air, depending on driving conditions and atmospheric temperature, could (or seem as if it could) cool down the oil much more effecient...

Correct me if i'm wrong guys.

yes, but water transfers heat much better than air so depending on ambient air temp it may or may not make the oil cooler .... but really you cant go wrong either way. just make sure you use a thermostatic switch inline with the cooler,

Also you dont want the oil to be too "cool" when it goes back into the engine, colder regions would be more suitable for the radiator style

i read that the oem ones arent just oil coolers but also oil warmers until the engine comes up to temp. I have the oem ones on 2 of my cars and my project motor and like them

all good info. to the guy who has them on 2 of his cars, have u tested with and without the oem oil cooler? i think i'm gonna go with the water way since it's oem and wont' be a pita to install. i'll probably get an oil temp gauge and measure temps before and after the cooler install. this won't be for a month or so unforunately.
