nhra battery rules
I need to relocate my battery to my trunk to make more space in my engine bay. I know I need a battery disconnect switch, but where does this have to be mounted? Can it just be mounted in the trunk? And do I still need to run a sealed box if I am going to be using a sealed optima battery?
you will need sealed box and a cuttoff swithc. The cuttoff switch has to be externally mounted with a statement clearly indication on off
A battery disconnect switch is only needed for cars that run 9.99 or better,it has to be mounted in the rear of the car on the outside so a track offical can shut it off it something happens, like a crash.
Ok, where externally should I mount it? Under the trunk? This is a street car, so I don't want an obvious on/off switch that is hooked to my alarm.
Just so you and everyone else who reads this knows, there is a downloadable pdf format of the rule book here.

You could mount it anywhere on a street car, dont matter,id try to find the easiest spot to reach that is out of sight, why not just mount the switch right next to the battery after its relocated.

No,You do not need a Cut off Switch no matter where you relocate battery too,all it has to be is in Sealed Box and Vented to outside of car, only time u need Cut off switch is when u run 9.99 or quicker
Maybe I am misreading the rules, but I thought this means I need a cut-off switch if my battery is relocated, regardless of e.t. I would love to be wrong so that I can just put the switch in the trunk.
8:4 MASTER CUTOFF
Mandatory when battery is relocated or on any vehicle running
9.99 or quicker. An electrical power cutoff switch (one only) must
be installed on the rearmost part of each vehicle and be easily
accessible from outside the car body. This cutoff switch must be
connected to the positive side of the electrical system and must
stop all electrical functions, including magneto ignition. The off
position must be clearly indicated with the word "OFF." If switch is
"push/pull" type, "push" must be the action for shutting off the
electrical system, "pull" to turn it on. Any rods or cables used to
activate the switch must be minimum 1/8-inch diameter. Plastic or
keyed switches prohibited.

ahemm re-read the rules. Its says it right there in the first sentence. Mandatory when battery is relocated or on any vehicle running 9.99 or quicker
Thanks man, but I did read the first sentence. Wouldn't the OR imply that if your car meets either of these qualifications, it needs a cut-off switch? Mandatory when battery is relocated or on any vehicle running 9.99 or quicker.
actually it said: A cutoff switch is Mandatory when the battery is relocated or on any vehicle running 9.99 or quicker.
If your car is slower than 9.99 and the battery is in it's STOCK postion a cutoff switch is not needed.

Ok, great. That is what I wanted to hear. I will just put the cut-off in the trunk then. I really didnt want to deal with mounting it outside the car. Thanks D-man.
dont bother with a cutoff switch in that case... u dont need it... if u would need it... it NEEDS to be outside... period... if not... just dont put one in
also... does anyone know who makes that cutoff switch with the red plastic "key"
