New setup spooling very slow...
Hey guys, I was finally able to start my car. Took it around the block and everything is decent, but the turbo spools very slowly. All piping is properly connected. The only thing I can think of is a leak at the head/manifold. I am missing 3 of the bottom bolts. I'm not sure how much of a problem this is. Also, I have no vacuum line going to the wastegate, but I don't think that matters either, does it? Only problem would be me hitting unlimited boost....unless vacuum keeps the wastegate closed, and it's opening a little bit as I drive.
Anyway, here is my setup. I'm trying to iron out these stupid issues before it gets tuned on Saturday.
B18A
JE 9.2:1 pistons
Inline Pro manifold
Garrett t3t04e 57 trim
Spark Racing front mount intercooler
EF1 L21 cams
Skunk 2 Intake Manifold
Greddy Type S BOV
I had a HKS manifold with Garrett T28 before. Saw full boost by 3500rpm. This isn't significantly climbing until after 5000RPM
Any and all help would be very much appreciated, as usual.
Thanks

yeah you need a vacuum line hooked up...
not because of it holding it closed... but the over boost would be bad...
the missing bolts coould be it... not saying it is for a fact... but i could be
its externally gated right?
what wastegate you using

Sorry about that. Tial 38mm wastegate. I changed some vacuum lines around, and hooked up the one to the wastegate. Still spools pretty slow. Very low boost tuntil around 5,000 where it hits almost full boost. I was afraid to take it further.
Stupid question, but, does it matter how you put the wastegate spring in? Ie, it being upside down. I'm not sure if one end is more stiff than the other. Also, there is no boost controller hooked up right now.
i dont see how having the spring in backwards would change anything... it looks like a single rate spring to me...
umm...when it starts to spool is it loud... and thumpy... like an exhaust leak?
i am still gona say its your missing bolts... get some bolts on there... tighten everything down and try it.... cancel out the obvious... and exhaust leak before the turbo will cause spool to be slow or none at all

Thanks man. I'm really hoping it's the bolts. They're such a pain to get on though, and the stock bolts aren't long enough because the Inline Pro flange is thicker.
Got some new bolts from the hardware store, but they're threading in kinda weird. I guess I should get that out of the way first.

yeah put mine on the other day and my spool started slowing down and traced it back to the exhaust mani gasket, went and got a thick fel-pro gasket, tightened the **** out of it cold, drove it around till it was warm and tighted the **** out of it again, hasnt leaked again!!! but i did pop my charge piping apart already too, i heard it and it wouldnt spool so i was like **** have to go home!!!!!!!!!!

that is a very good point for a t3to4e...
we need someone that has one to chime in.
but get the bolts in and see what happens... it might help a bit

I was thinking about that as well. The T28 was pretty small and a fast spooler, but I've heard 3800-4000rpm for this setup to see full boost. Maybe it's my LS motor
I put a gasket between the turbo and manifold. Maybe I should take that out? It wasn't a PERFECT fit, but it's made for this turbo. I doubt that could be doing it though...

Haha OK
Gonna get on all this **** tomorrow morning. I'm gonna pick up one of those wrenches that has a ratchet built in, because those bottom bolts are such a bitch!

Man I really should
It's only 8pm here. Wake everyone up with some open DP
Then again, I just remembered my altnernator belt got chewed up, so I have to do that as well tomorrow morning.

LOL! You sound like me.
On a side note, the spool is not nearly as loud as the T28 was...in fact, I can barely hear it...

holy cow the spool is the only thing i hear on mine, its a 60 trim t3/t04e on a d16, the exhaust is quiet as **** now!!!! i would say 4500 has full spool due to the .48 hot side!!!

Could be the open DP draining the sound
Gonna get that welded up tomorrow so I can listen for any leaks/see how spool sounsd. I can hear that twirtling sound at idle ;P
Any other suggestions before I start this day?

Just took the manifold off and noticed some oil on the gasket and flange, but NONE inside the runners. I'm not blowing smoke or burning oil, so i'm not sure what caused this.
I'm waiting until tomorrow to put it back on because my EGT should be here and i'd like to drill the manifold while it's off

What gear was this in? It you were on 1st gear, it sounds completely normal for your particular turbo.

2nd gear
Maybe 3rd, but I don't think so. I just took it around the block a few times.
I think I was spoiled by the T28
