It was probably getting to that point. If it was ran a while w/o changing the oil, there's good chance the thinned oil will have ruined many parts, including the head. If the retard that did that didn't replace the rod, the motor would have had zero oil pressure. I would think the sleeve wouldn't be that far gone, since the windage (sloshing oil) would have been spraying heavily on the sleeve.
A motor missing a piston like that would run even better (vs just pulling a plug/injector wire) since the dead cylinder doesn't create the losses of injesting/compressing/expelling the air.
