Minimum exhaust size for turbo

what is the minimum exhaust piping size i should get for a turbo?

most people reccommend 3" units for the performance gains

I went from a 2.36" to a full 3" Thermal and it made a decent difference on the butt dyno. Plus it sounds a lot better!
