Default LSD.. How do you know if.......?

How do you know if an LSD has gone bad or blown? Can you drive the car with a broken LSD?

I just want to know your comments on this so i can maybe "troubleshoot" my car. Something seems wrong with my tranny but i dunno if its the clutch or the LSD.

If you break your differential your not going to be able to move or move well.
Ive seen D series diffs break the trans case before they broke.

you should probably actually read more than the title of a thread before responding to it...

He didnt ask how to tell if it was a LSD or open diff. He asked how to tell if a LSD is broken.

well the tranny is in the car, its just doing something that looks like the clutch is slipping..but a new clutch should not slip..right? atleast it was running fine..
I was thinking maybe the LSD is the problem..Hmm or another thing that I might suspect..

A new clutch will def slip if its not broken in right. They dont grab well until you throw a few gentle heat cycles into them.

well the clutch has around 2000 miles.
Clutch setup is...
ACT Xtreme PP
Comp CLutch 4 puck disc (sprung)
Comp Clutch 8.5lbs Flywheel
OBX LSD

The car had 3 runs at the track with that clutch setup on slicks and was holding like a champ.

Heres the thing...The car had not been driven for around 3 weeks due to a Head gasket problem. We changed the Head gasket this week end. Took the car for a spin and only at 10 PSI the clutch would let go( "spin") after 5k rpms...it feels like the clutch slips..I believe a Bronze disc with that aggresive PP should not slip like that at only 10 PSI when a month ago it held amazingly at 18PSI..

I checked the car and i found something that might be the problem(but unlikely)..there might be a chance that some engine oil got into the flywheel and it might slip because of that

I checked the oil pan and it seems like it is leaking some oil thru the oil pan gasket right in the curve thats next to the flywheel. Can this be it?

Happened this week end. I dropped the oil pan to change the gasket..I think the gasket did not sealed well..

Damn so this has solution?..Can i take the tranny out and clean everything or do i have to get a new clutch?

this really sucks cause i am exactly a week away from selling the car and now this happens

I had the oil thing happen to my D series and the disc was shot. There is no way to reuse it. I had to buy new disc.

good luck

Almost sounds like your rear main seal is leaking, not the pan? Either way, if your clutch has been contaminated with oil, it's toast.

once a clutch starts slipping there is usually damage done...the oil may be coming out of the rear main seal which is right behind the clutch and flywheel....

also theres 2 metal washers inside the oil pan gasket on the side by the clutch...if you change the gasket these will sometimes stick to the block....when you put the new gasket on it will nto seal due to this

this is not a differential problem....

put the car in gear, jack the car up so that one front tire is on the ground and one is in the air, try to turn the wheel in the air, if it spins while the car is in gear and the other tire is on the ground lsd is not working.
