Default LS motor with SI tranny.

Ok I know that with the quicker gearing tranny you're going to accelerate faster(and worse gas mileage ), but I seen a couple videos of turbo LS motors(with LS tranny) and they seem to struggle to get traction into second gear.

You people with SI or even GSR trannies in LS motors, is it hard to get traction, and I mean on streets with street tires, not slicks. What RPM do you fall in the next gear?

Thanks love and peace in the Middle East.

traction in second gear? I can't even get traction in 3rd gear after 3500rpms, and this is with the LS tranny and only 9psi.

Cool, so do you guys get traction with the smaller gearing?

Quicker gears ratios, like the SI trans multiply torque more than the LS trans making the car accelerate faster. With a turbo it increases torque on the lowend(depending on AR ratio and impeller trim) making closer gear ratio with a turbo a traction problem. I would suggest an LS trans with a turbo and SI trans with N/A setups.

Umm, no. Stay with the Si or Gsr tranny.
I run the gsr on my LS. Traction is an issue, but you will run faster than the LS any day of the week.
Right now im running my stock 14's with dunlop rubber. At 5 psi I dont get traction till the top of 3rd gear and only at about 3/4 throttle. When I use my Azenis (nicer wheather) I can get traction at the top of 2nd.
My motor is totally built and Im staying with the gsr when I run my slicks. Hopefully I wont have to shift into 5th....if I do then my car will be a lot faster than anticipated.

93LSivic- explain your answer to me? You are spinning like hell from too much low end gear torque multiplication and you say with close gears? Why? It is only sensible to decrease gear torque multiplication by the trans because the engine makes more torque. You could stick with an Si trans if you want to drive on slicks for traction. If you spinning so much your wasting power, reduce gear multiplication and put it to the ground. You can use tire/wheel size to get the final setup. If you are having to shift into 5th at the end of the quatermile, increase the diameter of the wheel/tire and you can keep it in fourth.

The argument of which transmission to use for turbo has been long argued and probably never solved, there have been many a thread in the FI forums. Try searching for them, both in recent topics and the archives, maybe you will find your answer there.

There's no arguement about it...just a choice to make.

Do you want a traction problem, or a slow car problem?

Pick one please.

I'll take the slow car problem, because its cheaper.

Thanks but I'm not asking which tranny is necessarily better, just do you guys get traction problems with a shorter geared tranny.

No matter which tranny you pick you're going to have traction probs at legal speeds.

the differenence in traction between an Si and GSR tranny in first gear should be negligible; considering both trannys run a 3.23 1st w/ a 4.4 final drive. 2nd gear on is where the SI gets shorter.

Going with a longer geared tranny to solve traction problems is going about it all wrong. There are many other things that will help traction WITHOUT making you slower overall...

what about nitrous? would a different tranny make a difference on a LS hatchback with bolt ons and a 80 shot?

Like expensive tires, right? If you're making enough power (read it as torque) a longer gear ratio properly sized wheels and tires will be pretty much a nice cheap bet.

or a limited slip, good suspension setup, good tires, and boost relative to speed...

100% CORRECT

going to a ls tranny from a gsr/b16 is moving in the wrong direction.

jinx, did u ever end up shifting into 5th gear with the B16 tranny with 25in. slicks? if not, what was your redline set at and how far in 4th gear did u end up? thanx.

as was stated already, go with the closer/higher geared tranny (GSR or SI) and solve the traction issues. whether it be by using wider street tires with a better compound or by using the larger slicks at the track. the suspension setup makes a big difference, there's lot of things to changeout or adjust to prevent wheelhop and keep the tires to the ground.

if you go with the higher geared tranny the traction problems will only get worse (compared to the LS tranny), unless you solve the traction problems as best you can. then when the traction issues are taken care of you'll have a quicker accelerating setup.

i currently have a GSR tranny but was thinking of using the LS tranny with my turbo setup for 2 reasons mainly: better fuel economy and cause my GSR one is high mileage and often times grinds (not to mention that i'm getting an LS tranny for nothing). but i'm gonna repair the GSR and hopefully add the Quaife, then i'll be set.

Thanks Tony1, and the rest of you guys who helped.

What MPH are you guys at, when redlining, with those big 20 inch slicks?

i never shifted into 5th. i had a 9800 rev limit. i think you'd be fine with anything over 9000 and under 135mph or 9500 and 140 mph. jason hunt used a 9500 rev limit and was good for 140+ on a b16 cable tranny. thats with 25 inch slicks. using 24.5" slicks won't make much more of a difference.

I use an LS tranny with my turboed Si. I traded trannies with a guy who had a low mileage ls tranny with a quaife lsd in it. I like it cuz i get really good gas mileage, especially on the freeway. I like freeway driving and at 90 mph in 5th gear i'm only at about 4,000 rpms. I use a smaller profile tire though so the gearing is somewhat smaller.
