Low Idle/Vacuum/Weird cold start-up problem help.
I recently did my valve lash adjustment and I did it when the motor was warm. Im not sure if this is the problem and will be checking it soon, but I just wanted some other peoples opinions on it.
When I start my car when its cold, It will fire right up and jump to 1000 rpm and then it will kind of stutter its way up to 1600 rpm. It used to just jump straight up to 1600 nice and smooth. I also noticed that it will only pull around 15in/HG when it used to go to about 18 when cold.
Once warmed up it tends to Idle around 650-700 with 19In of vacuum. It used to idle steady at 900 with 21in.
The final thing that I noticed was that when I am engine braking the motor used to pull about 24-26 in but now it is consistenly at 28in.
Is this all due to the valve lash adjustments being too tight? Before they used to be a little on the loose side which is why I adjusted it. Thanks for any help. If you have had a similar experience please share it and tell me what fixed it. Thanks

Well I just went out and readjusted the rockers. They were WAY to tight. I guess I learned the hard way to always make sure the motor is cold when doing the valve lash. I went on the loose side of the specs and now it makes a slight tapping noise so it will need to be tightened a bit, but as far as the idle and cold start-up it is much better. The vacuum is back to 20-21 and goes to 19 on a cold start right away. Lesson learned. Thanks for viewing those 11 who have. LOL

Thanks anyway guys. I dont know what I was thinking when I did it a few days ago. It was way off. I noticed a nice increase in top end though from the tighter clearances, and better response/bottom end with the looser. I think Ill just tighten them up from now on before I go to the track and try to cheat my way into a slightly higher lift cam LOL.
Hey Adam do you know if Andy and Kevin are coming this saturday?

not sure if andy and kevin will be coming. . i think i'm tuning their cars this week, if their chip kits come in from xenocron.com
i wouldnt tighten them past factory spec...its really not a good idea. i actually overheated my old worked-over itb'd dohc zc that way. had them way too tight, and smoked the exhaust valves, making everything hot. not sure why, i read somewhere the reason that can cause problems.
i'd only go to the tight side of spec...imo. cant WAIT for saturday, as long as the weather is right. chicago meets own.

Yeah im hoping we get a nice cruise going on a nice open freeway around there. I think im just going to tighten the to the factory mid settings of .004 in .007 ex and hope it is a happy medium of good vacuum and quiet rockers. Well see tom. after school.
