Default A little help with pistons....

Well this summer I got new pistons and rods...Eagle rods with wiseco 81mm pistons. After I got everything together I started it up and there was a bit of ticking that I have been told is just the piston slap because of the forged pistons. Lately and since the rebuild, I just havent been comfortable with the noise, because it doesnt completely go away when warmed up, but it does get better, also after 3000 miles I switched to mobil 1 15-50 synthetic and the noise seemed to increase.

My question is this, I am going to pull my head this winter to make sure everything is ok and I may end up getting new pistons. All I did was honed the block a little, should I need 81.5 mm pistons, or was I correct with the 81mm?

The car has run strong now for about 3500 miles and there is no burning oil ar anything like that to be concerned about. What do you guys think?

Thanks,
Craig

the pistions your using make alot of noise but you still need to sheck your pistion to wall clearance

What kind of numbers should I look for? There wasnt a good number with the pistons, so I didn't check with the first install. If they are too high what should I look into for replacements, An 81.5mm?

Thanks

WellI was just reading on Wiseco's site, and they mention offset pins. Could this be part of the problem...it says for quietist operation that the offset should be opposite the direction of engine rotation...

the only way to know is to check to see if your piston to wall clearances are within spec, i'm not sure what wiseco pistons specs are, but it will be somewhere in the vicinity of .028 - .045.

Someone on here may know the exact PtW clearances for the wisecos. If the noise increases with a thicker oil, it could be that the valve lash is out of spec, you way want to double check that also.

Honing while in the car can be a bad thing, because it is very easy to remove more material in one spot of the cylinder than the next, and cause non-concentric bores. If you decide to pull it apart i would recommend checking the PtW clearances before and after your hone in 3 spots in each cylinder, the top, the middle, and the bottom. I'm not sure what you'd want the maximum variance to be between the three numbers, but i wouldn't recommend more than .008 clearance difference without having it line bored, and going with the next size up piston.
