Default j&s users HELP!

ok I just put in my j&s safeguard in my 95 gsr I need help tuning it not sure really how I should set everything I know it will be different for every car but I need to make sure I am doing everything right and see what everyone else is doing. my settings now are; the sensitivity set low the start at 2 psi and the retard in the 10 o' clock position. The car pulls real strong but feels weak in the mid range like the timing is being retarded. not sure though. Also I am a little confused about the 3 and 4 dip switches what are they for and where should they be set?

Switches 3+4 control the amount of retard (height of retard curve in this picture) in the 2500-5000 range. Both up = 8 deg retard max. Both down = 2 deg retard max.

Switches 3+4 have an additive effect on the BTM function of the J&S.

For example, if you have the retard rate **** set at 12 o'clock, that is 1 deg retard per psi of boost. Let's say retard start is at 2 psi. Let's say you see 10 psi of boost at 4000 rpm and switches 3+4 are both down. The J&S will automatically pull 8 + 2 = 10 degrees of timing at 4000 rpm. 8 is being pulled by the BTM and 2 by the settings of switches 3+4.

You can calculate your exact retard rate by measuring the voltage on the retard rate **** with the key on, car off. It requires removing of the J&S front panel. Here is map of voltage to retard rate:
http://www.muller.net/sonny/safeguard/retard_rate.txt

My car ran good with the following settings:

Switches 3+4 = 4 degrees (3 down, 4 up...I believe)
Retard Rate = 0.31 deg/psi (0.45 volts)
Retard Start = 1 psi (1.0 volt)
Sensitivity = 10 o'clock

I have seen your charts before and printed them they really confused me. Is it ok to have the sensitivity set low? say 9 o'clock. I had it at like 12 oclock and it really bogged so I turned it down slowly until it picked back up and started running good. and back to the switches so for example I start retard at 6 psi then set the switches to pull 4 then at 10 psi I will have 10 deg of retard?

If you think my instructions are confusing, try reading the originals (sorry, John ).

Try my settings out and get back to us.

ok I used your settings and they worked very well the car pulled good all the way through the only thing I did different was put the start point a little higher that picked me up a little at the track. by the way what octane do you use? I have 92 here that may change things a little.

I live in the San Francisco area of California. We're stuck with the crap 91 octane gas here.

You may be able to get away with slightly more aggressive settings than me because of your slightly higher octane gas.
