interesting comparison stg3 vs stg 5
Two almost identical setups (trinh and danny's setups) using full-race manifolds and 60-1 turbos, one with a stage 3 wheel, the other with a stage 5.
danny at 18lbs in a stage 5
trinh at 26 lbs in a stage 3
While obviously the boost levels are different, you can see a definate difference in power curves. The stage 5 is linear and looks to have much more potential up top but the stage 3 comes on STRONG super early and then seems to begin to die out up top. ALso one thing to note is that this turbo is blowing hot air at 26 psi so it may have made even more power at 24 psi.
Comaprison point 1 - 4000rpm
stg 3 - 150 tq 120 whp
stg 5 - 220 tq 160 whp
Comaprison point 2 - 5000rpm
stg 3 - 240 tq 220 whp
stg 5 - 280 tq 260 whp
Comaprison point 3 - 6000rpm
stg 3 - 380tq 440 whp
stg 5 - 320tq 380 whp
Comaprison point 4 - 7500rpm
stg 3 - 380 tq 520 whp
stg 5 - 320 tq 480 whp
so as common sense would have probably told you, stg 3 = faster spool, less up top. stg 5 = laggier, and more up top. the stg 5 seems to have a strong very low end, but the stg 3 comes on sooner.
Also now that i olok, the stage 5 has a flatter curve... i really need to go study

Re: interesting comparison stg3 vs stg 5 (FFgeoff)
Geoff, But the stage 5 is using a .63 exhaust housing which completely changes things compared to the stage 3 in the .82 housing.
If I had to pick a graph I would go for the top end run of the .82 with the stage 3 wheel, it put over 400lbs of trq in one place and then came sloping down still ahead of the .63 stage 5. But I guess this could have something to do with the boost figures as well. Who knows?
I would bet that if the stage 5 wheel was in the .82 housing then we would be able to compare this alot more. Both are great ways for power.
Also if the stage 3 wheel was in the .63 exhaust hosuing then IT SHOULD spool
faster then the stage 5 wheel.
I guess the real question would be: Does the 8psi difference between the two graphs equal give the advantage to stge 5 .63 or stge 3 .82 if all other factors are equal??
