Default intercooler fabrication questions

So I am giving making my own intercooler a serious thoughtn over here, and have a few questions.

1. What is the quality of the Ebay cores?
2. Where are some other places to buy cores?
3. When making the end tanks, are there any spacific considerations that need to be taken?
(besides where the intake for the hot side, and cold side exhaust will be placed)
4. Are there any helpful hints out there for a decent welder, but first time I.C. fabricator?

Any input will be greatly appreciated, and welcomed. Thanks!

I'm gonna be building my second ic in a couple weeks, I bought a cx racing 4" core off eBay that's what the first on was too. I made the first one with too large of endtanks made my intake charge temps go up so I had over heating issues. But this time I'm gonna correct that. I'm gonna be making a build thread so I'll show how I did mine. Kinda hard to explain how I'm gonna build the new ones.

That is a decent link but a few things I wound't do with it for our applications. First, 2.5" piping is sufficient/has good flow up to 650whp on our setups. After that, thinking about larger piping should be considered. There are people that will say you need bigger at lower power and others that say 2.5" is fine for 800....but from all my tuning and building, if you are making 650 or less....its probably a street car and spool/spacing/etc. are all a factor and 2.5" is fine.

Second, they recommend using .050 for IC end tanks. That is pretty thin for the amount of pressure that they will see. For their application, the amount of pressure they run may be acceptable, but I wouldn't run .050 AL for end tanks. I would run at least .083 or more for our higher boosted cars. Also, AL piping is cheap now a days and everyone in their mom sells it. I don't know why on earth anyone would use steel for IC piping any more.

To the OP....I always use a good core. T1 sells the Garrett cores and that is what I run. They are great cores and the prices are reasonable. I like to make my end tanks out of card board and tape them to the core to make sure they fit and all is well before I start making them out of AL.

No, I'm planning on JB welding it all together. I got really good with molding clay in art class. LOL! Ya, I've welded aluminum before.

So, what about cores? Where is a good place to get one. The "spearcointercoolers" link went to a site in Chinese.

Just checking man, welding aluminum is not the same as steel. It can be much more challenging. Prep, prep, prep.

Holy sh#*! Blown hatch! 500 for a core?! Ther has to be one for cheaper than that. T1 is taxing that for sue. Are there any other suggestions you could give me. I want good quality, but that is just too high for me.

I have heard good things about the treadstone cores, not sure what they run though.

Cause the pipe is cheap but the TIG welders are still very expensive

Nice, thanks for the info on Treadstone. And yes the damn welders are super pricey! I am fortunate enough to have a buddy who allows me to make runs on his when I need to, as well as help me with tough welds.

Yes, I think I heard of them a while ago. Although, I am looking for a "COST EFFECTIVE" way. If there is one that is.

Garrett cores aren't all that expensive? You can also get them shipped to any Garrett Distributor for easy shipping. What do you want to spend on a core? If price is that much of a concern why not just run a precision 600/750hp IC for pretty cheap.

Go-Autoworks.com has nice intercooler setups. Greg also sells cores.

'ebay' is not a brand of cores, so your question about their quality makes no sense. you could find some great ones on there, you could find some shitty ones on there

I'm not sure JB Weld is your best option here. I understand trying to save money and whatnot, but there are certain lines i wouldnt cross in order to save a buck. I just have a hard time believing that a JB Welded IC would hold pressure reliably over time.
