Importance of micropolish and balance???????
I am having a hell of a time here in dumbelfuck Ohio finding a place to micropolish and balance my crank. Should I go without it or keep looking? What are the advantages, disadvantages? Thanks.
You dont want to balance just the crank. You want to balance the whole assembly, from the pressure plate to the crank pulley.
So do that after the motor is all together?
how about micropolishing? I read in a domestic engine rebuild guide you can DIY with a shoestring and a very light abrasive?

if ur going to balance it...do like 93ls said and balance everything... pistons, rods, crank, pulley... etc... including the bolts... basically the whole rotating assembly... and u do this before u assemble it
can someone explain this process? and its advantages? I think I thought balancing was something other than what it really was, if that make any sense. Thanks.
balancung is when all of the parts in the rotating assembly ie. crank, rods, pistons, etc. are all machined to have equal weight. Trust me it will be well worth your time to do this while the engine is being rebuilt

If you bought new aftermarket pistons and rods, they don't need to be balanced as they are close enough as is. Just balance the crank. Costs $40 here in Cali. Micropolish is a good idea. It costs $40 also. If u saw how quickly a shop can do the polish, you wouldn't pay the $40. I never heard of the shoe string V-8 polish trick but if it can give u a nice finish, go for it. Not a bad idea to balance the clutch and flywheel but if they are new aftermarket, they should be in balance already. A V-8 machine shop should be able to do the crank balance. No need to hang weight on the journals as you do with the V-8's balance.
