Just got an evo 16g for my build [yea another turbo lol] and it came off of a Rally America evo so it has a 34mm restrictor on the compressor inlet. At first I thought it was simply a slip fit due to the 3 set screws holding it in place but after removing them I cannot get the damn thing to budge.
I'm not sure if it is a slip fit and just work hardened after numerous heat cycles or its pressed in. There isn't enough room between it and the lip on the factory compressor inlet to get anything in between to pry them apart and the inner diameter is a smooth transition so no way to get a puller inside of it. I don't want to trash the restrictor to get it off either.
I would try heat but my tip to my torch broke and there's no way to buy just the tip

ideas?

meh, i have access to a mill but im kinda busy moving and what not.
i'll pull the compressor housing off and go from there

Shodan, I don't understand...what gets balanced?
Does it hurt the wheel when ya"ll cut it off?
Sweet radius on that piece, tho..speaking of machining

Compressor housing has to be re-"rounded" once its cut. He could also heat it and see if he can expand it. Most of the time these are pressed in.

Im an idiot (no sleeo in 5 days lol)
I can just get another compressor housing. I would be interested to see how tue restrictor influences torque production on our torqueless wonders of motors though. Luckily I have friends with dynos. I know that peak power can be lowered by as much as 40% but torque can be increased by 20% and peak torque is typically carried from high 2000rpm to the end of 5800-5900 application depending... and given that its a street car that wouod be right run the butter zone.

Both angles on bith sides of the restrictor are very anally measured and machined to prevent air diverging from the backside of the restrictor, as ar can only go sonic through the restrictor that determines the restrictors choke point so they try to make it as efficient as possible. Having worked in a hgh end machine shop I too was impressed with the machining as well.

Mac is correct. These are a machine/press fit. They machine the id of the conpressor inlet and then press the restrictor in, the set screws are merely a precaution to keep it from spining of moving. The machine work is impressive.

You can see the part of the restrictor that fits in the compressor inlet here. Not the exact same one but its close.

And the compressor housing tried to come off at a funky angle and it did this....

I'm so pissed off. This turbo was in such good shape that it had no shaft play, oil leaks/seepage etc. I gor the turbo complete from outlet pipe to o2 housing and o2 sensor for so cheap that even a new compressor wheel and a rebalance will still put me well below the typical price point of a used evo8-9 16g.
I guess the question is now should I just put a 20g compressor wheel and comp. Housing on it (and machine the current cover w/ restrictor to fit as well and a titanium aluminide turbine wheel, or just put a stock wheel back on it. Even if I put a stock wheel back on it I'd probably put the TiAL turbine wheel in it.
