Default How To: Swap Engine Without Engine Hoist (Ghetto Technique)

My build is finally coming along.....
9.5:1 built to the teeth LS VTEC Turbo

Im sure I'm not the only one that does and thinks this...
Engine Hoists are out of fashion....

here is the ghetto way to "drop" your swap, or as i say, drag your swap

We jacked up the rear using the LCA Mount points to use it as a pivot, although not required...

jack the car reallll high

and jacked!

The Drivers side is slightly higher due to the fact we are dragging the motor from the drivers side of the car...

engine is halfway in the car.....

engine is kind of in the car....

car is lowered and ready to bolt the engine in.....

the chassis, brake rotors, etc are less than an inch away from the ground, DO NOT lay the car on the chassis/frame.....

Place something under the oil pan to prevent damage to the oil pan, we used a black metal tray....

Stay tuned, tonight we should be placing more items under the long block in order to get it higher so we can mount it.... more pics coming soon

Thanks to:

Chris Dawson for helping me with swap and set up
Arturbo ( Arturo Ortiz) for sourcing parts and help of engine assembly
Earl Laskey (Earl) for Benson Sleeve Job and build of bottom end
Endyn (Larry) Port Job w/ complete new valvetrain
Parents- Helping w/ Everything
tony1 ( Tony Palo) will tune this set up as a daily driven turbo car, hoping to make 400-450whp and magically fab a custom downpipe.....
and fellow HT members who answer all my questions.......

another easier way is to use your jack and lift the motor into place. (kinda the same way you did it other than lowering the car that low to the floor). I do it that way and it works better than a lift and you can do it by your self

Not many people have a lift in thier garage......

Or if you mean engine hoist, i think this is easier, i have access to many engine hoists, but not worth using them..... unless ur doing a big v8 or something

no it wont damage the oil pan as long as you do it where the header/down pipe run threw and use a 2x4 and jack it up from there

I actually use that techinque all the time. Seems to be easier then a hoist for the civics and integra. Accord motors almost need a hoist without having to take off a bunch of parts. We have a custom tray that motor goes on top and slides
Good luck with the build and keep us updated on how it goes. Paul

Ahhh yes...done it many times. I usually put the engine on a low profile creeper and roll it under there. Works good and is a hell of alot easier than sliding it around...you should try it next time

Honestly, when doing a swap at home without a hoist if you have the motor together, just jack the car WAY up in the air and drag the motor underneath.

If the motor is apart, just put it in piece by piece, its way easier than you think.

haha thats how i pull my motor out almost all the time. usualy if you do it this way with a crx or 4th gen civic, you have to take off the intake manifold. thats the way i got it to work. never had a problem taking the b series out of my 5th gen like that lol.

I always use a hoist, to me it's much easier on the back and I do it by myself quicker. Whatever gets it in though
