Default How Noisy Are Built Engines?

When I say built I mean pistons, rods at least. I have GE sleeves so I am not sure if this makes them louder or not as this is my first built engine.

It seems noisy. I expected it louder than it is at first (when cold) but the noise seems to diminish when it warms up. it is still noisy though.

I have the Zex 59300 cam for the Z6 and I hear this really makes the vavletrain noisy. We are doing a valve adjustment tonight and torquing headstuds as I have reached the 10 heat cycle mark.

I did find this thread but I wanted to bring this to the FI forum as lots have built engines.

If you have vids or sound clips, this is a plus. If you need a place to host them, let me know.

Any comments, opinions, etc, bring it on. I figured there are others wanting to know the same thing.

on my forged motor, yes i notice is a lil noisier

i DO NOT think the bottom end makes noises... all my noise comes from the head... wich i also have the COMP CAM 59300

now.. on my previous motors the head was pretty quiet

this head has port polish, milled, 3 angle valve job and stuff and this one is a lil noisier... i did 2 valve adjustments and still does it... so im guessin its just a lil loud

I think the bottom end makes some noise as with forged pistons even if warm. maybe I am wrong?

It's called piston slap. Loose piston to cylinder wall clearance and the silicon content and expansion rate of your pistons have alot to do with this.

Ha-Ha, I knew what it was called, I just didn't post it. :hammer

So you have it when it is warmed up.

On a side note, I think my "Mangina" is just huge cause I am worrying like crazy lately!!!

its ok to worry, but you will drive your self nuts listening to every little sound, i found my self doing this on a previous motor i had, i would drive around with the radio off just listening for noises, if you really want to scare your self listen at the oil pan when the motors running. if endyn built your motor i wouldnt worry about it you had its built right

You should'nt have piston slap after it warms up if the motor is built right.

I think it's a D-series thing, because I have alot of friends with built B's from rods/pistons, to fully built Benson blocks, and all are alot more quiet.

Got a vid or sound clip EL?

I am pretty sure it is mainly the vavletrain though cause it quiets down once warmed up.

ya mine is pretty noisy on startup too. it kinda dies down as the motor warms up. but it's definitely louder than stock was.

Are those clips when it was just built or recently?

I am going to order a "Got Diesel" sticker here soon.

My D16 sounds like a Diesel. After going thru the gears on boost its not so loud until it cools back down. Running Arias pistons.

"Got Diesel" stickers I want a set.

Yep my Y8 is loud too. I noticed the more miles I have put on the engine the noise has diminished or I am just numb to it.

I drove with my radio of for a couple of months I used to geek hard!

Every 75mm, unsleeved D block will be noisey because if you put an aftermarket piston in it, it will have too much piston to wall clearance.

Some piston manufacturers recommend looser piston to wall clearances for forced induction. Why would it matter if you have sleeves or not?

How do forged pistons affect knock sensor use?
