how much horepower can a STOCK LS (b18B) engine handle?

Hi..I know i'm putting a turbo on my hatch, but I want to stay within the safe horsepower limits for the stock internals.. how much can the stock rods and sleeves handle? the rods would be the first to go usually, right?
I will eventually build up the block, and put a vtec head on it, but until then, i don't want to worry about stressing the block in anyway, SO give me SAFE estimates https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

EGtoDC2 09-25-2003 01:42 AM

how about with blockguard rods and pistons??

how much horsepower can the b18b handle with a blockguard, rods, and pistons (9.5:1 or so)??
i want to achieve 325 whp or so..so i want to be safe at all times https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

this is covered twice a week. Im usually not the one to say "do a search" but do a search!

Re: how about with blockguard rods and pistons?? (intekragsr)

funny, if it's covered twice a week then it would'nt have taken you two seconds to answer it. instead you took 5 seconds to bitch..thanks a lot.
do you surf these threads to help, or to just flame?
what exact word combination would call up these threads, because most people don't label too well to begin with..

Re: how about with blockguard rods and pistons?? (EGtoDC2)

Funny, it took me 2 seconds to type "stock ls" in the search funtion and come up with more than enough info. Your welcome.

No I dont surf threads to flame. I acidently click a topic thats been beaten to death, and instead of ignoring it like a smart user would, I decided to chime in and give you some sense. Most people wouldnt even bother lately. Thanks for being an ass. Attitude like that obviously wont get you much help.

Exact word combination? Does it require rocket science to think of "stock ls" "stock motor" "stock engine" ect ect? This forum hasnt been around for a decade with a huge archive for nothing. Your not the only noob who ask's simple vague questions like that.

For shits and half a giggle, I decided to pitch in my half peso.

I'm glad he didn't answer you, especially know that you've shown your true colors.

By the way, thanks for keeping my topic fresh on top of the list, you do that everytime you post to it.. just keeping these "noob questions" fresh, huh? thanks, maybe someone will be kind of enough to answer me (remember, to an extent, all this stuff is relative, even opinions on safe power handling).
peace.

Whats your whole setup going to consist of? I'd say safe depends on your tuners idea of safe. I've seen numerous threads of people hitting anywhere from 250-300 whp. Supposedely 330 has been done. Again this all depends on whos tuning it and what the setup consists of.

Re: how much horepower can a STOCK LS (b18B) engine handle? (EGtoDC2)

I'd say 250-280whp tuned with hondata will be fine but 300-325 is possible. Boostedhybrid put down 374whp on his stock gsr at 11psi tuned with hondata s100. That is pretty impressive and he's trying to get 400 out of it.

FuzzyGreen 09-25-2003 09:34 AM

1000-1200 hp with proper tuning. Give or take a few horses.

Re: (FuzzyGreen)

Check my sig......and i run 11 everyday. Last night I ran in a gumball race for 20 miles. 115mph and up trhe whole way...................I won https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif $100

Just depends on tuner. But you can beat up a B18B. they are well built.

Some other poeple cars started over heating and Egt's were sky high for others. me........................fine the whole way. I didn't have a problem and i drove hard. Wouldn't suggest doing it though. Too dangerous https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emsad.gif

i blew up at 15lbs with FMU and 310's. it ran great at 10-12lbs.

I think the reason why you blew it at 15lbs because you probably maxing out the 310cc injectors. Usually people that are boosting at 13+lbs run 440-550cc from what I seen. Don't quote me on this but I THINK...

Mr. Softee 09-25-2003 12:13 PM

Re: (SiBirdie)

do not use an FMU. EVER.

300whp is about the most id do for now and then track use. it know some epople have done 325whp+ for a few passes but thats pretty crazy.

EGtoDC2 09-26-2003 02:19 AM

Re: (94goldjungsr)

no FMU? you mean use an AFC (air/fuel controller)?
I understand that a Fuel Management Unit (mechanical type like the Vortech) just increases fuel pressure under boost to keep it rich enough to withstand problems..
but the problems is you can't adjust it (from what i've seen and good sense of knowing that a good factory CPU with piggback NEEDS tuning, much less a mechanical device strapped to your fuel rail *err..whereever..

Hondata A/F control actually piggybacks the CPU to do STOCHiometric measurements while UNDER boost..what this means is it supplies the fuel Maps so the computer sends the correct fuel pressure to the fuel injectors...not some mechanical pump in between...

But, this is just what i collect from nights of sleepless research..project car will be here today, hopefully https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emcocktl.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emthdown.gif

What I did: The basics
B16a, blockguard, JE 9:1 pistons, Crower rods.
Made 340whp running ~18psi (maxed out 550 inj)
gets 25-30 mpg crusing.
PR3 Hondata
~2200lb CRX

Still running strong for ~8k miles, 15lb spring in the Tial, use an apex conroller
to get past 15.

get some 550-650cc inj and turn up the boost until they're maxed out.
you'll have 325-400whp.

550's are a good choice: the biggest inj. that is 'common' I.E. they won't cost you
an arm an a leg for a set. and they'll keep you limited to 'safe' power levels,
~340 whp. (keeps you from getting too greedy)

Sweet! thanks for the info. if you maxed out 550cc injectors at 340whp'ish..then they will probably work for me https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif
YOu're getting great gas mileage too! i hope my b18b/turbo will do that..

Is it possible to get 400-500 hp on an B18B.
here is going to be my setup. SRP pistons with Eagle Rod. Crower turbo cam, springs, retainer, and ferris valves. with t4 turbo, shooting for at lease 20 psi.?

stock head?

b18b head with crower cam, springs retainer and ferria valves shooting redline @ 9000 rpm

Re: how about with blockguard rods and pistons?? (shawn_crx)

you wont make any power up there. you need to open the ports up.

RenoRacing 09-26-2003 12:18 PM

Re: how about with blockguard rods and pistons?? (shawn_crx)

i would say that you could squeez 400 out of it but 500 seems high for the ls head. Not saying it hasn't been done but not everyday. from every thing i've heard the ls heads don't flow very well. other than that and some little bolt ons(intake manifold, tb) and fuel issues anything is possible.

Mr. Softee 09-26-2003 12:41 PM

Re: how about with blockguard rods and pistons?? (RenoRacing)

i just dont see 400whp possible on stock sleeves w/ srps and stock head.
