How to install a Block Guard?
How do you install a BG proper? How much do machine shops charge for a install on a BG? What else do I have to install or do when putting in a BG?

Yes, but it is not absolutely necessary to hone the block afterwards. Just extra precaution. To be honest, my block was honed before the block guard install.

I installed a block guard in a b16 a long time ago and warped my cylinder out of round. I had to bore the motor .020 and get new pistons. I wouldn't recommend a BG personally, I had great luck without one on my next motor.

TRUE! If you just "tap it in" it will egg-shape the cylinder walls. If you are going to add a block guard, do it before all your machine work.

I would like to know who measured it and how much out-of-round the cylinder actually was. I don't see how it is possible that a little aluminum blockguard could warp the much larger cylinder sleeves that are partially made out of steel. If anything the blockguard would distort, not the sleeves.

Pounding on it wasn't exactly the best idea. Glad it worked out good though. Blockguards are good protection to help keep the cylinder walls from walking or shifting.

When I installed mine the block was completely dissambled. I also would like to know if there's more people out there that went without honeing the block and experiences they had?

Re: (squirtle)
why pay for a block guard, when you can post your cylinders for 10.00?

the proper way to install a blockguard is
1- all parts needs to be perfectly clean
2- heat the block and block guard to working temperatures
3- press the block guard in with slight pressure...
4- once its snug, let it cool
5- once cool , its needs to be machined, and surfaced, so its as the block surface... means u are machining whatever didnt go into the block......
thats it...... normally its honed afterwards... and or work on whatever else u doing into the block

Posting is not a bad option, but does take more skill to align and drill in the proper areas. Sleeving is even better but not in everyones budget. Any more info on dropping block guard and honeing.

Re: (AlienKrOZ)
diffently sounds easier than it is done... i thought the same thing... i had to do quite a bit of filing and even when i thought it was good i got it 1/2 into the sleeve and needed to file it more... it wouldnt come back out so i opted to beat it in rather than get tapping srews and try to pull it out with a hoist... i thought i messed the block for sure but when the machine shop bored it everything was ok...

I don't know about other ppl but this is what I did..
I had to tap it in pretty hard..(GE BG <--- not recomended) and that was after filing and trimming the BG for a long time.. and when I put it in, I couldn't get it back out so I put it in anyways and drilled the BG where it was really tight to weaken the BG... I know I did pretty stupid **** but it works!
I've put about 5000km so far and no problems as of yet.. we'll see how it goes..

It is not necessary to weld it in. Just tap it in.
