Default How do you know when the o2 sensor has gone bad???

I have a 99 Civic with a p28 ecu/hondata. One day when driving all the leds strarted to light up on the auto meter a/f gauge and the car started to sputter and misfire.

I'm not getting any CE lights at all. I read some posts in the archieves which makes me believe its the o2 sensor that has gone bad. But why not CE light???

I had my o2 sensor code go off once over the summer. Fiddled with it and it went away. When I went to smog I failed big time. Im running really rich and have killed my catylitic convertor. One explanation is the o2 sensor so Im swapping it out for a new one.

You won't get a cel usually. The ECU is set-up to correct for the o2 if it doesn't get a reading. Hence the reason it usually runs really rich when the o2 goes out.

The ECU goes into "limp mode" to protect the engine from damage when it sences that the O2 isn't functioning correctly. It runs the engine extra rich. My O2 is shot so bad that my car won't idle. Nice huh?

I've never gotten a cel for o2. Must be my luck I guess. I was driving around for two weeks wondering what was going on. I noticed the wastegate was all cruded up so I investigated it to find out why. Found the lead to my o2 sensor had wiggled off. I was worried for a while that it may be something worse.
