well the time has come to pull my motor and send it out i have everything undone (exept the damn axle nuts ). Its ready to come out and now im debating wether pulling it from the top is the best option. It just seems that ill have to tilt the motor ALLOT to get it out, theres just ac lines and all kinds of **** on the trans. side. expierenced opinions are welcomed.....

Usually we take them out through the top, but If there's a lift available they definitrly come in and go out through the bottom

Out the top with a whinch to tilt the trany side down as its raised up.

Definately out the bottom! I prefer this method even if there is a cherry picker available. One thing that really helps is to drop the crossmember(if applicable) and place a steel bar under neath of where your feet would go iside the cab and span the exhaust tunnel from jackpoint to jackpoint so that you can get the front of the car high enough to slide the motor out rather than struggling to put blocks under the jack and going at it from the radiator support since most jacks top out at 18" or so.

Last few I've done... I've removed the head while in the car, then dropped the block/tranny out from underneath... real easy

i do all my ef/da stuff out the top, so i dont have to remove crossmember+radius rods. for dc/eg im all bout droppin from the bottom. its alot easier that way and droppin it right onto a dolly makes life easy.

out the bottom... i dont even have an engine hoist... every single motor i take out goes out the bottom... so much easier

i use to pick it up from the top..but i think dropping it from the bottom is quite easy now. i put in my engine through the bottom also. it lines up so easy. since most of the mounts bolt up on top.

sweet guys thanks for the replies!!!! if you drop it through the bottom, how do you let it down on the dolly????

and if i were to pull it from the top how much does it need to be tilted???

i dont let it down on the dolly..i just drop it to the ground..take off the front 2 wheels, and lower the front end all the way til the engine sits the ground..of course if you have front cross memebers that will get in the way..take that off first. then jack up the front end as high as you can to pull the engine out. i just drag it out..sometimes i would drop it on a tire and pull the the engine with the tire. not too hard.

i have a dc2 chassis so i dont think i have a cross member??? but dont the rotors hit the ground first???? and it doesnt hurt the oil pan to have it sit on it????

i stuff some old t shirts where the rotors are so it works as cushion..but i dont lower it all the way til the rotors rest on the ground. you can use 2 honda hand jacks 1 on each side..that way if your jack doesnt go that low, the hand jacks will do. like i said earlier i use an old tire so the engine can sit on it..or i put a piece of wood on the bottom so the engine can balance. well you're not going to let the engine hit the ground hard..you're gonna lower it slowly and let the engine sit. it wont dmg the oil pan. i havent dmg any.

I pull all my motors out from the top. Best thing you can purchase for you cherry picker is a load leveler.....makes things 1000x easier especially with obd0 cars that need to have the trans dropped around the trans bracket on the frame rail.

I started doing this **** a long time ago on domestics, so Im totally used to pulling out from the top. Plus, I dont like scratches on my oil pans

I've done both But pulling from the top worked better.

buy a furniture dolly from home depot or lowe's, the whole swap will sits on the dolly and you can easily pull it out..

yup i would drop it.. if you want you can try both ways and see which way tou like best...some have time(engine lift) and some has a busy shop to run(floor dolley)

well the reason why i drop the engine from the bottom is because i dont have enough room for a hoist to get around in my garage. but this is my preference. ive done both ways also, ive used a hoist, to me, it probably seems a bit harder because if the engine is tilted sideways..gotta bring it back down and realign the chain. maybe im just not good at it. but when i put the engine in from the bottom, i did it in 1 try. everytime. but with the hoist, it'll take me about 3 tries average. i guess its whatever you're use to.

i like taking it out through the top its just less complicated... do a couple motors through the top and you get used to it... i can do it no sweat now... i have the same problem of no room to move in the garage... i just back the cars in and then open the door when i have to pull the motors... plus foldable shop cranes save on space when storing them...

i think dropping out the bottom is more of a pain int he ***. i mena if you dont have a cheery picker ok . but i rather pull thme from the top . with 1 extra person to tilt the motor if needed to get it out. dropping from the bottom and dragging is a pain in the ***. lol
plus i dont have high enuff jackstands
