how to clean a used turbo?
i bought a used t3/t4 turbo and it's quite dirty. So i wanted to ask what is the best way to clean one without destroying it. Is it bad if i got water on the turbine wheel???

you won't hurt it with water, but use some carb cleaner or brake kleen. Nasty Chemicals > Soap and water

Submerge it in water, and let is soak for a few days... And then give it a good coat of paint over the grease and dirt to hide it j/k
I would take apart the housings, and give it a good wash on a parts cleaner. For the wheels, I just blast it with brake cleaner. Usually I try to avoid using a rag and putting force on the compressor and turbine wheels because they are fragile. For the CHRA, I plug up the oil feed and drain, and then clean the dirt off.

Re: how to clean a used turbo? (wicked2night)
well i'm in the middle of the cleaning proces. Now i'm wondering what size are the bolts on my T3/T4 that hold the compressor housing it's 4 of them. They aren't 10 nor a size 9.
Another thing is how do i get the exhaust housing off? One bolt is hiting the feed "thingy" on the CHRA. So i'm thinking maybe i need a hamer to beat the housing to move a bit so i just might get enough room to take the bolt out.
Thanks!

unbolt it, if one of the bolts can be backed out becuase of the housing, rotate it until you have the space to back it out. once all bolts are out, you can separate it, sometimes its hard, sometimes its not, just take your time and be sure not to damage the wheels.

I cleaned 4 junkyard turbochargers with Liquid Plumber and a tooth brush. It took all the oil and buildup off reallly fast and got the turbos looking good again.
Although I didn't use them on my car, I just used them as bookends for my bedroom.

Re: how to clean a used turbo? (CRX_1.8T)
well i orderd the 3/8" key, so i'll wait for a while to get that one.
My problem with the exhaust housing is that i have taken out all the bolts except the one that is hitting the feed flange. I also thought on rotating it as i did the compressor but it doen't move, so that's why i considered a hammer for a while. Should it be able to rotate the same as the compressor?

Re: how to clean a used turbo? (wicked2night)
Now i have the key, but i still have the old problem of getting the bolts out on the turbine side.
The bolt number 2 is stuck, but with a bit more rude force i think i can get it out. The big problem is the bolt nr. 1, the turbine housing doesn't spin and i don't see how i'm supposed to get it out, since it's hiting the oil thing.
help me out.

Re: how to clean a used turbo? (BoostedEG6)
but if you take a close look you'll see that i took out all the other bolts and my problem is that the housing doesn't want so slide. It's quite fix.

So try using PB Blaster or something like that to get the housing loose enough to rotate.
