Hondata cost is wild!
I just got an email from my local Hondata dealer and the total cost for my turbo setup would be $668! Does that sound right to you all? I thought it would be around half that. Everyone and their brother days dont turbo w/o a Hondata but damn thats pricey! Dont you have to have a laptop and be somewhat of a wizard to tune it? Any thoughts or comments are welcome. Save the flames please. Thanks!

Re: Hondata cost is wild! (RedTegLS)
well, that's about average after conversion harness, ECU and chipping service.
It's an investment and ability to take control of your car for the better and longer lasting. It is surely worth the money in the right hands, compare to other standalone which mostly are $1000 and up..

hondata is almost the same as uberdata / crome (free odb1 editors) with only a few extra options. Don't do it!

Well, here is my question and I already tried searching. There are only 9 posts under uberdata. What do I need to use this Uberdata? A laptop? Can anyone give some better than vague instructions?

Re: (RedTegLS)
To tune an uberdata chip you need a chip burner and the sofware if Im not mistaken. I don't use either, so I can't really help you out much. There was an awesome thread about Uberdata the other day!
Here it is, read and learn as much as you can before you purchase either one

The SMC is cool dont get me wrong, but if you cant shell out like 700 dollars for engine management which is basically the most important part of a turbo Honda then you are in the wrong game. There are so many fuel management choices out there, do a search on all before you commit, then maybe youll have enough money saved up for something

Re: Hondata cost is wild! (D21X)
600 isnt bad.
if your going n/a it would be half that
its about half the aem ems and the aem is about 600 less than other big time standalones so the hondata price isnt that bad.
the conversion harness kills you. (MAKE YOUR OWN!!!!!! )

i personally wouldnt compare hondata to uberdata at this point. there are probably literally 1000x more hondata customers out there for every uberdata user. what i am saying is that there isnt a large supprt community for it right now so dont expect to have all your questions automagically answered. you have to do the research on your own to figure it out. the community of developers working on this stuff is literally worn out thanks to people coming in and demanding that they be spoon feed the info on how to work with this stuff. its not impossible but its not obvious. you have to do the footwork yourself.
the features and support are unmatched with hondata. maybe the free rom editors will become more mature soon but its not close.
i dont want people thinking they are going to get the same results with a properly tuned hondata system as they are if they go the cheap-o route and get uberdata and burn their own chips without a proper tuning environment. you have to know what the hell you're doing.
and unfortunately a lot of people from honda-tech have been flooding pgmfi.org with useless posts and stupid questions and they're getting really tired of it. i feel partially responsible.

Re: Hondata cost is wild! (94goldjungsr)
Yeah, I would definitely agree with going uberdata if you know how to tune it. Like if you have your own burner and a wideband its great for street tuning, but you have to know what youre doing like Falcon said. If you dont know how to tune, virtually every import tuner knows how to tune Hondata or AEM. Some tune better than others but thats why you look for a reputable shop first. I love Blakes software, and I was one of the first to get it from him (before it was free). The only reason I have Hondata now is because I got a really good deal on it, and I thought Blake dropped off the face of the earth so it seemed like the following and support went downhill. Whatever system you go with just get it tuned right and youll love your turbo Honda for a real long time

I dont think I need a conversion harness. I have a 95 and thats OBD1 right? His price breakdown didnt include a harness. Here it is straight from my email.
Gregg,
You will need to get your ECU socketed for the chip. The cost is
$65 plus $8 return shipping. After your ECU gets socketed, you can
install the Hondata chip. The system you will need is the s200. Cost is
$295. The boost option is $200. We charge $65 to put a baseline program on
the chip. Shipping is $35. If you have any questions or would like to
order, please reply to this email. Here is a run down of the prices:
ECU socketing $65
ECU shipping $8
s200 $295
Boost $200
Baseline map $65
Shipping $35
TOTAL $668
Thank you,
