Default High EGT problem

OK after getting my A/F to 11.5 to 11.7 the egts are going pass 1400. 3rd gear pulls the EGTs go pass 1400. NOw ive synced the distrutor to the ecu. Ive run from 7deg to 20 deg of timing and the egts are still out to lunch. Im thinking maybe running back 24deg of timing.

Can anyone shed some light?

what kind of manifold are you using and where is the EGT probe located?

mine's in a log manifold, 2" from the head but that makes it get the other cylinders' heat also so I see pretty high EGTs even under cruise

i also get ridiculously high EGT's with low or high boost. i've seen 1400-1500deg plenty of times. and even when cruising in 5'th gear on the highway it averages around 1100-1200deg.

but I'm pretty sure 90% of my high EGT problems are due to my restrictive exhaust system.

how is your exhaust setup?

My exhaust is 2 1/4" all the way threw no cat straight pipe. My egt probe is in the wastegate hole on the 5 bolt turbo housing.

im in the same boat..

with a stock ecu and stock motor, exhaust and everything, i got high EGTs with the same autometer gauge.
1.3-1.4k degrees cruising down the highway at ~3k rpm!

now on boost, my EGT gauge is pegged at 1600* at the end of third gear.
the motor is a d15b2 bottom end with a d16a6 head. hf mani and evo3 big 16g turbo. 12.5 psi and an open 2.5" DP.

:edit: dsm450s and a walboro 190 pump.

im running solid AFRs, 11.5-12:1 with ~15* timing on Turboedit. ive tried advancing and retarding timing, no noticable difference. im about to run some colder plugs, i got 7s in there now. ill let you know if there is a difference. im hoping i just have a hot motor but a pegged 1.6k has to be too hot

what kind plugs do you run?

Hmm i wonder why fiddling with timing isn't helping the egt's on your setups. Weird

Cast vs Forged pistons seem to make a big difference too.

i just went from 7s to 8s. i havnt had time to try and to any WOT pulls and some real tuning, but at idle and highway cruising my EGTS are down about 175 degrees. id really like to get into water injection, but i gotta learn how to tune first!

your at 23 deg with a y8 at 8-12psi? Are you using race gas?

It's normal for where your probe is placed.
Myself and another buddy has it placed in the same position, and have EGT temps right where yours are, if not slightly higher. I have had my car tuned twice by different tuners...same result

There's actually a calculation to determine your actual EGT's based on where you put it, and distance away from your head (with many other variables).

water injection is not required. but would drop temps down a lot

Just keep an eye on it for any changes. If it goes up or down noticably, then you should be concerned.

remember the further away from your head the lower the egt's will read. If egt's are high after the turbine housing then they will be even higher where they are normally read in one of the manifold runners.

update: my colder plugs reduced EGTs atleast 200*!! i went from a pegged 1600, to just over 1400 degrees after multi-gear, WOT pull.

i went from 7s to 8s.
