Help request on turbo selection from Italy
Hi guys,
I need your expertise. A friend of mine has a Fiat Coupe, I am wondering if you know what it is. It has a 5 cylinder engine with a Garrett TB28 turbo.
He is thinking about upgrading the turbo which is why I am asking the question here. In Italy turbos are pretty expensive, so I am thinking about helping him getting one from the US.
He is thinking about a ball bearing turbo, running pressures around 1.3 to 1.5 bar. The car stock has about 220 hp and the target hp is 300 just increasing the pressure plus a good tune. Stock the turbo works at 0.9 bar.
I looked at the garrett web site and saw the GT series turbos. Can they be used? Or what you guys recommend? If you need any more info I will try to get them for you.
Thanks a lot!

a garrett gt28rs might be a good choice but may or may not bolt up to the downpipe. and the connectors for the intake and charge piping might be different as well. any chance you have a picture of the turbo?
There is a picture of the turbo on one of the web site that sells them for the car. If you go to the link below and scroll down a little bit, on the right side there are two turbo pictured.
The one on the left is a modified one, the one on the right is the original one. Those guys sell their downpipe because it would be different.
Those guys are selling the TB28 ball bearing, can I get that in the US?

garrett has a few bb t28's they have a couple gt28r's and a gt28rs, if they make a downpipe that works with a gt28rs then i dont see any reason you cant go with that turbo. im not sure which exact turbo those bb tb28's are. i would double check to see, the stock downpipe might work with the 28rs. wish i coudl help more just dont know those fiats too well. cant tell from the pictures on the website
I will call them tomorrow, I could not figure out what they are talking about when they say tb28 bb. I looked on google the model number that's on the web site (T28FC560BB) and their page is the only one showing up.
If I understand you correctly, the GT28rs would be the best to get providing that we custom make the down pipe and probably figure something out about the charge pipes. Is that right? Would the GT28rs comfortably run higher pressure then the T28?

well the gt28rs is a larger turbo than the others to begin with so even at the same pressure levels it will make more power. i think the gt28rs will be a great turbo to support your goals of 300hp. the part they have listed may be nothing more than a gt28r, or a gt28rs. feel free to pm me if you need help finding a particular garrett turbocharger, we stock many, and have access to the entire garrett lineup.
I looked at the garrett web site and the turbo looks very good if it will fit...
I will talk with him and let you know. He needs to have the downpipe done, will do some more research
