update: installed an oil pressure gauge... oil pressure seems fine. its usually around 75 at the rpm where i hit vtec. that should be fine righT?

ok, so ive been thinking some since I dont really think its vtec (oil pressure is fine, vtec is being engaged by the ECU)
here are some other ideas i have, i'd like some feedback.
1. my downpipe isnt great, its kindof a sharp bend to avoid AC
2. Ive been doing some reading, and realized that my wastegate merge isnt very far down the downpipe. its pretty much right by the outlet of the turbo.
3. my car was spewing out brown smoke at high rpm. maybe i'm running super rich? I didnt have a wideband and they didnt use a sniffer because it was a budget dyno run.
4. my valve lash spec might be off. I may have overtightened them a bit during a recent valve adjustment
5. could my turbo be bad? theres no way it should be running out of steam, but is there any chance a bad turbo could cause this? however, my engine does hold boost. it doesnt lose any. SO that is out of the question.
6. Could not enough timing be causing this? ive got .9 degree retard per psi.
7. another weird problem ive been having is low vacuum at idle, like 14 in/hg MAX. I have no idea whats going on with that, but i'm thinking maybe this problem could be related.
help me out!

i think that smoke is your biggest clue.
if vtec is infact working.
I really do not believe it's cuz the turbo is "too small"
thats bull, that turbo is fine for that motor, might not be huge but it shouldnt drop like that.
do a compression and leakdown test.

well i'm sure it just needs tuning. i mean, the parameters in uberdata aren't right for every engine. or, for that matter, any engine that i've ever tuned. tune the car before it blows up, man.
you people kill me.....
you people kill me.....
First things first...it does appear that the vtec is engaging...hence the tiny little bump at 4800rpm. The stock cam won't have much of a bump, and it is tuned that way so the change over isn't incredibly noticable.
The power band seems about right with your setup, and corrected you should be around 180, to 190whp. The power might be falling off due to excessive timing pulled, or other factors such as the exhaust. The larger the exhaust you get on there, the higher the VE will be, and your torque curve will flatten out.
But at any rate, I don't think this is anything to be worried about. Just have fun with you boost mang!

The answer is: Don't Run A Basemap - TUNE UR CAR
never drive your car around blindly not knowing what ur a/f is. slap a wideband on that thing. you can't tune/diagnose a car by guessing - I know from experience...

wait it's not tuned??
yeah man, if you're running a basemap, you're taking a huge risk
with the life of your engine.
not to mention expecting it to make good power!
basemap should just be used to get u to the tuner
You could getcherself a wideband and do it urself.
just street tune it.

no unconstructive criticism here, bro. i said tune your car.
i bet your air/fuel ratio is all over the place. i'm sure i could tune out about 30 more hp than whaqt you are putting down.
your setup is very dangerous, and you will probably blow up your engine pretty soon. (blow up meaning melt something)
that constructive enough for you?

Just for comparison, I thought I'd post another dyno of anothe turbo sohc in denver. Got this off turbo d16, and his setup wont go post 150whp, 160wtrq for the life of him. I dont think he ever figured it out either, and his setup is tuned (well as tuned as you can be with the AFC hack).

lol, we got haterville coming in to visit. thanks guys. OH yes, and last time i checked, its damn hard to lose 30-40 hp from being too rich. riiiiight. I guess i have little faith in your tuning ability. you a tuner? And theres no way id settle for only 20 more hp, no way. this thing should be making 190-200 at the wheels.

wow, thanks Unsivil_audio, thats really interesting... hes making a very similar power curve to myself. Who is this guy, and does he have any posts on this subject? dang that dyno is so similar its uncanny.
SI SHANE-- im not trying to start anything but im assuming your a B-series guy by the "SI" in your name. and like most B-series guys, you all hate on the D.
i konw for a fact paul(s1ngle) is lacking a solid 50whp. i've seen hundreds of turbo D setups wtih multitudes of parts and turbos etc etc and he's deffinitly looking at a loss of 50whp
i think tuning on a wideband would net a good 25whp right there.
paul you also mentioned the angle of your dump tube merging into your dp was too perpindicular.
and you also mentioned the bad fuel pump which you replaced after the dyno and a few small leaks in your pipe, bov, fmic and mani that your fixed or are in the process of fixing.
work on all that one at a time and it'd be interesting to see what you put down again

oh i have one more comment too, if i was running SUPER pig wash the cylinders rich to rob 40 hp, please explain to me how i made the 950 mile trip home, boosting fairly frequently, and averaged 28+ mpg. heh
im sure your not losing 40-50 whp. lets be real 7-8 psi on a basemap will probably net you that much whp. i would imagine with tuning at the same psi you could get 180 whp. bbka ran 10 psi with a turbo bigger than yours and made 210 i think. i think your only losing 20-30 whp by not tuning it. good luck
when it comes down to it,
your a mile above sea level
untuned on basemap prob running pig rich and have most of your timing taken away, i bet with the timing bumped up and the a/f cleaned up a good 25-30 whp is achievable
dont get your panties in a bunch, just have someone tune it

ok s1ngle, now you're just makin yourself look like a douchebag. just because one person mentioned that you might be running rich, now you think it's rich? how do you know it's not lean? there's your good gas mileage.
you asked for help, people are offering it, and you're being a ***** about it. get the damn car tuned. you have a basemap and you're driving around on it.
what an ignorant dumbass

Thanks for your insight, but no. You are also an idiot. you have seen multiple dyno graphs of D series motors with the SAME setup making 50 more whp. No. you havent seen 5+ 210whp 1 mile above sea level etc....
I assume your some D series guy by your comment and you assume everyone is against you and your mad d series pride. I hate on your stupid friend who wont take anyone help, didn't tell anyone he isn't tuned... and cant figure out what is going on.

bahahha... ok i'm done.
i was actually responding to boostedej1 when i said mostly right, sorry I didnt specify. but yeah, sometimes the voice of reason spoken NICELY is all it takes guys. Didnt your mothers teach you that?
oh yes, and how dumb do you think i am. Its not lean. I check plugs religiously, and i do have a narrowband AF which is useful to the extent of telling if its rich or lean, and its definitely rich. kerplunk.
Yeah you guys are kinda typical "basemap !?!?!? ohmygosh you drive around with that???" lol

the 2.25 exhaust is causing some problems/. mainly because you are going from a 2.5" exhaust down to a smaller size. thsi creates turbulance and problems.
i had a y8 with 9lbs put down 174 at the wheels untuned on uberdata, with a Garret T25 which is close in size, but i had a 3" turbo back exhaust. which helped alot. also you may be running very rich do to the fact that you have DSM injectors and an inline pump. i was running rich with just the DSM 450s if i would have had a pump id have been bleeding gas everywhere. scrap that exhaust and get some tuning. and you should be aroun 180+ whp.
