Default is this headgasket on upside down or backwards? (pics inside)

little background, engine was totally rebuilt at a reputable engine shop. got it all together and there is a massive oil leak coming from the back of the engine block when trying to start it. I got my bro to crank it over while I was under it and It appeared to be leaking from right under the intake manifold or from the intake manifold.

Engine is a type R with jackson racing supercharger.

Looks to be correct from the way the tabs are facing, have you checked simple things like the oil pressure sending unit, oil filter gasket, and other things of that sort?

Looks right to me. Put the car on jackstands and drown the back of the block in engine degreaser, grab a flash light and get somebody to start the car and find out exactly where the oil is coming from. Do u run a sandwich plate adapter as a oil feed? If so thats where i'd begin looking.

I was helping a friend of mine with a swap and he had a massive oil leak also. He forgot to put the oil pressure sensor in. It's right next to the oil filter.

It is a type R engine(non-turbo) so I dont need an oil feed adapter. It does however have an oil cooler but I replaced that gasket today because I thought that may be the problem.

yeah I got under it and had my brother start it up. It seemed to be gushing from the bottom of the #2 intake manifold runner I think. I did not want to run the car too long like that so i only checked once. It will only do it when the car starts. It wont do it when I take out the ecu fuse and just crank it over.

as for the oil pressure sensor, I thought of that so I did tighten it up cause it was a bit loose.

A big problem is this is in an ef chassis so its very hard to see whats going on.

man im so frustrated with this car

also replaced the oil filter with a new one, and double checked that I wasnt using two gaskets.

well sucks to say it but if i were in your situation i'd take the intake mani off and look where the block and head meet. Look where the oil is coming from then pull the head if its from the gasket

im not too familiar with the jackson super charger... but isnt it mounted where the intake manifold is? right off the intake side of the head. Could the oil be coming from the supercharger if they have oil in them? just trying to see if anything else could be causing the issue

i have installed a head gasket upsidedown and backwards before.

the oil leak will appear imidiatly, and look as though its coming out from below the thermostat, it will make a huge mess in about 5 seconds (pump out a quart or more of oil out and onto your floor)

well it is leaking about that fast. but doesnt seem to be coming from the thermostat area. I am going to try to have someone crank it over while im under it again and double check to see whats going on.

Its leaking from the engine for sure. The first time I noticed it leaking was when I first thought that the engine was ready to be started. I cranked it a few times with the ecu fuse unplugged to prime the system. I then looked under the car to check for leaks and didnt see any. after fooling with a few things I finally got the car to start. It only ran for a few seconds at a time( I think it has bad gas in it). I ran it like that handful of 2-3 second bursts and figured there was something up. When I was looking for the problem I noticed about 3 of 4 quarts of oil underneath the car. this was a few days ago.

Today I finally got a chance to try and hunt down the problem and replaced the oil cooler gasket, torqed the oil pressure down, etc.

I will try to figure it out some more and come back on here. but thanks for the advise so far, I will let you guys know what I figure out tommorow weather permitting.

ok I found the leak. I had my brother turn the engine over with the ecu fuse unplugged. it is leaking from where the intake manifold and the head meet, between the #2 and #3 intake runners. Is there a plug or something in there? I guess Im going to have to pull the manifold either way.

There is a plug in the cylinder head that is covered by the intake manifold. It is right in the middle of the cylinder head between the intake ports.

ok just got the manifold off. I found the hole you are talking about.

I guess the shop did not put this plug back in. I know I didnt take it out. Does anyone have a part #? for this plug? is it a standart ntp thread or something I need to get from honda? I would really like to get this back together tommorow so if anyone could help me out that would be super duper.

I imagine you can just use a 1/8 bsp plug.

I had to hunt for one of those and its hard to find them. I would try to find a old head laying around and careful when taking it out. They tend to strip very easily.

Yeah i dont have any heads laying around, I found a place online that sells all types of fittings. http://www.mcmaster.com/ they had it in stock for 1.40$. its in new jersey so it should be here monday.

Im guessing I should teflon tape or paste the fitting before putting it in the head right? or is there something else I should put on the threads?
