Default have a look see!

Im tearing this down and building for 10-12psi...don't freak, its a JDM B20A (b20a5 88-91 prelude)...

it seems everything as far as the head and cylinders go looks good...i did throw a rod though...you'll see the carnage...

the motor's been sitting for almost 2 years

Any thoughts on the flaky stuff and why its only in 2 cyls?

ENJOY!

CARNAGE!

That's odd. The cylinders still have the cross hatch from the hone but it looks like the engine has been run for a while. Rings never seated?

i tore down a 93 vx motor with 240,000 miles that blew a head gasket, still had cross hatch, then tore down another vx motor that slung a rod, around 190,000 miles, hatch was still very faint, but still there. both vx motors had been severely abused. tore down a 85,000 b18a that blew ring lands, cross hatch was still very evident. cant say ive ever torn down a honda engine that had stock rings and pistons that didnt show some sign of cross hatch still being there. i dunno how they do it. ring tension spot on??

also was this engine carburated?

hondas rings are very low tension rings compared to some other companies. When you tare down a small block chevy with less than even 60,000 miles, there is a ring at the top of the cylinder that is smaller than the bore than where the rings sit, those rings tension is much higher.
The cross-hatches on a honda block isnt surprising

Normal? Yikes. If I ever take apart an engine and the bore doesn't have a mirror finish I get scared. Maybe this is why Honda engines have so much blowby and tend to blow rings?

dont listen to the idiot with the mirror finish statement. honda motors have a cross hatch if they are in good shape.

and the flakey stuff?? that just carbon from the pistons and the heas that built up over time. no biggie. brush it off and call it a day.

ouch

i dont think hes an idiot....actually from his posts ive seen i think he is pretty knowledgeable...

but yea, i dont agree with beepy on this one.

i just picked up an ls blovc for my ls vtec setup and there are still cross hatches. this is probally because of the low ring tension like stated

Yeah- I began hearing rod knock and told the engine supplier i bought it from (the engine was under warrenty) that it was knocking and they wouldn't send me another one untill this one blew; they didn't even believe me that it was knock...so knowing that this thing's days were numbered, and the time was running out on my warrenty for a free motor, i raped it for a week untill the knocking got worse and worse and worse...I was on my way to a meet and got off the freeway and got into town and it started clankityclankityclankity and wouldn't pull itself away from a stop, so i pulled off the road and called AAA...Had the new motor (free btw) in the next weekend
