Default Greddy Type S BOV

Why is the outlet of the BOV threaded? What's its purpose?

For a filter?

I saw a BOV that had a pipe screwed into the outlet and then routed back into the intake

Cool, so that's like a bypass valve feature

I've seen this on DSM's

I also found this just incase we start a debate

If recirculating keeps the turbo spooled better, why do rally cars vent to atmosphere?

People have the impression that a recirculating valve keeps the turbo spooled better, but they forget to factor pumping losses into the equation hehe.

Truth is, BOV works better than recirculating valve, but manufacturers want quiet over that fraction of a second better turbo response time.

Stock EVO 8 bypass valve

Upgraded by Pass Value, see how its going back to the intake piping

First off, rally cars use anti-lag, which in super simplified terms basically retards timing excessively, adds fuel (sometimes) and moves the combustion out of the motor and into the manifold. Rally cars do not have either a BOV or DV, they just let the turbo surge. With the advent of Sequential trannys, its not an issue.

Now, about that greddy-s, it has the threads in it so you are able to run it in recirculation mode. This is how I have mine installed on my 1.8t GTI. Note this is not my picture, but is how it is installed:

I guess we are just comparing a few different levels of rally here SCCA cars do also produce more power than WRC cars, but there is a lot more technology in WRC then there is in SCCA. Antilag could not function if it had a BOV, it produces up to 1.5bar with the throttle closed!

I'm not really trying to start anything either. Just explain how FIA WRC cars can run Antilag and a BOV at the same time

The main reason manufacturers recirculate is because alot of these turbo cars run a MAF system. Venting can give you problems here because this air is measured and is fuel-compensated but is expelled at the bov so you get overly rich and possibly stall.

Another is they have to due to federal quidelines set by the EPA. Externally vented BOVs cannot come standard on new cars.

I have seen SEVERAL FIA WRC cars that have had BOV's. They Team Subaru 555 WRX that was on display here in Okinawa had a BOV but did not use ALS. I have seen a couple EVO's that didn't have it and a Puegot.

Does the horn just make it blow off louder or something?? I can understand having one on the compressor side of the turbo but not the BOV
