Default Greddy 18G question- why does it squeak?

Hey,

I have a Greddy turbo, and if I rev the engine, I hear a squuuuEEEK as the turbine comes to a stop. Also happens when decelerating.

Anyone else hear this? Sounds a little like a singing bird as it stops.

something wrong with the turbo or some other part, my 18g doesnt make any sound slowing down or spooling up except that nasty sound of it spooling and sucking in air.

Well, the turbo should never stop...it should always be moving. So, I'm guessing bearings...probably wobbling and hitting the side of the compressor housing.

I hope you're all wrong

I'll take the pipes off of it and try spinning it, see what it's doing.

I don't remember it happening when it was new, but I only had it for ~12 hours before I went to an HPDE, and ever since then it squeaks.

I think it should stop spinning at idle, it doesn't have ball bearings does it?

NO turbo will be completely stopped at idle. If yours does... it's done.

I also greddy kit. if your turbo doesnt spin at idle you have a definite problem BB or not. the only time a turbo will not spin at idle is if is extreamly large like a t66 on a 1.6litre. Now we both know that the little td06-18 is going to spin at idle if not check for shaft play maybe its time for a rebuild

nope, mine stops sometimes and I have seen other ones as well. It has been like that on my car for 18,000 miles and still boosts perfectly. My friends B18b with a revhard kit also does not spin at idle.

Hey! Thanks everyone for the pointers!

I suck!

My turbo spins freely, including at idle.

It's my Type S blow off valve, if you rev it to 2000 from idle, then let off the gas, the BOV will open and blow a bunch (silently) and then as it's closing up again it whistles (tweee-EEEET). It opens up even with just the vacuum force acting on it.

Whew!

haha, that was kinda obvious. I'm surprised no one nailed it. That is the reason I ditched my DSM 1st gen. It would squeel at 17-18in vac so when I was just crusising it sounded like the pager beep in a department store
