Going LS/Turbo, automatic!
Hey all, I'm new here! I've opened my wallet and taken the turbo plunge! Earlier this year I swapped a B18B1 and 4spd auto LS tranny into my del Sol S. 122.1whp and 106.0 ft-lbs torque -- better than before, but still only good for 16.1 sec @ 83mph down the 1/4 mile. Using the automatic tranny is just an experiment. A friend of mine has a turbo LS auto in a Civic hatch, and it's been running strong the past few months at 7psi.
So I went with a RevHard kit, T3/T3 turbo, intercooler, BOV, Tial wastegate, turbo timer, and boost guage is what I'm starting with. Using stock internals (except Skunk2 cam gears), stock ignition, stock auto tranny.
I'll start with 6psi, and no boost controller for now, and hopefully get about 180whp, and estimate mid 14sec 1/4 times (hey, the del Sol is heavy
Here's my questions... Do I need larger injectors than stock at this stage? The shop doing the install (JoTech in Garland) says it's not necessary. Would they be necessary if I go up to 9psi or higher?
Are turbo cars quieter? Truth is, I've never driven a turbo car. So I think I'm in for a pleasant surprise once it's installed
But I'm wondering if they really are quieter? What if I use a straight pipe? Does the turbo spooler "muffle" some of the noise? Other than the BOV, what noises should I expect? (and the BOV should only make noise when I let off the throttle??)
One more question... I have a custom made triple pod cluster for the del Sol. But the only guage I ordered was the 60mm GReddy boost guage. What two other guages do you guys recommend? (and what brands? are Autometer ok, or do they suck?) I figure an air/fuel ratio guage (but it has to be a good 60mm round one), and a temp guage (but temperature of what? the exhaust gas? tranny?), or would an oil pressure guage be more useful? I just want the three guages for now...
Thanks! I'm starting with a mild turbo setup, and see how the tranny holds up. If all goes well, I might deck the block and stuff, jack up the boost, get a better torque converter, and see just how much the auto tranny can stand. Maybe.
