thought id check out these forums for some diffrent opinions besides vwvortex.

heres the thread from vortex....
http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2021344

ill try to make this as short as possible
specs:
VR6 motor
turbonetics 60-1 t04e .58 AR ball bearing turbo
38mm tial wastegate dumped to atmosphere with 7 psi spring
greddy profec boost controller

car would hold 17 psi all day long with the 2.5 inch catback on and would get about 8.5 psi with the controller turned off running just the wastegate spring.

I fabbed up a 5 foot long 3 inch exhaust off the downpipe and am now getting about 4psi of boost creep after 4800 rpms

with controller off im getting about 9psi finalyl creeping up to 11.
controller on if i set it for 13 after about 4800 it will creep to 17psi.
turbo made full boost at 3200rpms prior

some ideas ive had... wastegate is no longer the point of easiest flow since the exhaust is so open, the flow is going through the turbo rather then the wastegate.

would a 38/40mm hybrid help this at all?

and a pic of the engine in question
thanks

Re: getting boost creep running open downpipe (vr6mole)
Try running a larger spring? Whats the actual boost you want to run? If you try turning the boost up more than twice the wastegate spring you can sometimes have problems.

Re: getting boost creep running open downpipe (SOHC_MShue)
well when i run just a straight 7 pound spring i creep to 10.5 or 11 so if itry to run 14psi i creep to about 18..if i try to run 11 i creep to 15

Re: getting boost creep running open downpipe (vr6mole)
what kind of manifold... where is the wg placed on the mani?

ATP manifold, you can see the wastegate flange opposite of the turbo.

Re: getting boost creep running open downpipe (vr6mole)
maybe its just the manifold... i know the vr6 engines are shoe horned into vw's so the manis are tight fits... maybe its just the mani design. the wg doesnt look too efficient where its currently placed

Re: getting boost creep running open downpipe (wantboost)
but why would it creep now and not with a 2.5 inch catback?, would upgrading to a .96 AR help at all?

and this is my 5th post so i cant post again till midnight damn newbie haha

Re: getting boost creep running open downpipe (vr6mole)
a full 2.5" exhaust has more backpressure than 5ft of 3" piping..

the exhuast gasses are moving much faster with the 3" installed than with the 2.5". the wg's placement hinders it from doing the job properly.

Re: getting boost creep running open downpipe (wantboost)
yea i was gonna pin it down on the open dp having less backpressure

I agree.

I think the wastegate placement on that mani is horrible, but what do I know.

Re: getting boost creep running open downpipe (MooreBoost)
alright i can finally post again....so bascialyl with the placement of this wastegate even if i bought a larger gate such as a 40 or 46 it would still creep??

Re: getting boost creep running open downpipe (vr6mole)
most likely yes. as the wg can only bypass 2 cylinders effectively

Re: getting boost creep running open downpipe (vr6mole)
I had a similar problem going with an open downpipe (after taking off my exhaust
)...not enough back pressure causing a big boost spike.

hmm thats not cool....i guess i just have to live with it?

and with your big boost spike did you find anything to fix it?

Re: getting boost creep running open downpipe (vr6mole)
I have to disagree with the wg placement posts.. There are numerous cars running that same manifold with over 400whp a few at 500whp with no problems

Re: getting boost creep running open downpipe (vr6mole)
to solve the problem I went from this...

to this, but...notice the space I had left from the wastegate to the IC, not very much left. so I am looking for another manifold.

is that a 46mm wastegate i iamgine? with the v-bands....and i prety much have plenty of room with mysetup as i only ahve to clear the firewall/strut tower.

but as to the guy that messaged me, i cant IM for 2 weeks (trial) gay, but manifold is just stock cast, and the turbo was ceramic coated by turbonetics when it was bought

Re: (vr6mole)
its a 48mm WG...you can just have an elbow adapter made for the v-bands to work.

its true, he's right. as i said before, i think its mainly due to a lack of backpressure

yes, backpressure is causing the creep... so if he wants to run his exhaust system like this... then the wg placement is to blame.

i will bet money that if the wg were centered over the turbine inlet, he would have no creep runing his 3" open downpipe

well paul these cars that have 400-500whp are running somewhere between 20-30 psi, therefore they dont need the wastegate to work as hard since they are reaching the effciency of there turbo. They need all the flow into the turbo they can get.

Re: getting boost creep running open downpipe (vr6mole)
WG placement is what is causing it, I guarantee.

Maybe you can block off that port and mount the wastegate near the "collector"... you can gas weld cast iron....

he said he didnt have the boost creeping problem when he had his catback exhaust on.
