Default Gear based timing retard VS multi-stage boost controller?

I know that when a FWD drag Honda is making 600+ whp, all that power is unusable in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear. I have a Neptune and I know that there is an option called gear based timing retard, and I want to know if there is any disadvantage to pulling timing with this feature at the full boost VS using a staged boost controller.

Pulling timing will increase EGTs. Pull enough timing and you will melt stuff. Get a progressive boost controller. It will be significantly safer.

Using a staged controller and timing retard can give you great results. The staged controller alone will also make a huge difference.
