Garrett CHRA Exchange Program, GT35R
So after 6,000 miles it seems like my GT35R has some damage on the exhaust turbine (some tiny chips on the exhaust turbine and some metal shavings along the inside of the exhaust turbine too)... there turbine on the intake side is perfect and there's absolutely zero shaft play though. But I'm thinking I may have to get it rebuilt or replaced since the entire car is apart right now, so I wanted to see if anyone has had experience with Garrett's exchange program?

THANKS!

Ouch. There's not much to exchange here. What it simply is, is that you talk to a Garrett authorized distributor for an RMA number, (which the distributor will call on your behalf for you) and you turn it in for a reduced cost on a replacement cartridge. It's been a while, so I'm not sure what % the discount will be, but it is worth exchanging. you might even be able to for a couple more bucks get a GTX3582R, since the cartridge has to be replaced.

Thanks for the reply; I actually found this PDF on Garrett's website:
If I can get a new cartridge for $399.99 I'd more than happy.

The document doesn't mention a core charge...

I called turbos direct about my GT3082R, and they quoted me $425 to replace the cartridge. They can also do seals for ball bearing garretts I found out.

Re: Garrett CHRA Exchange Program, GT35R
From what I’ve been reading it’s roughly $400-450, I’ll give a few Garrett dealers a call tomorrow and find out… Turbos Direct is about 40 miles from my house too.

I see how I mistyped my earlier explanation, so I deleted it. The red is what it typically costs for a Replacement CHRA when you send the original CHRA back to the master Garrett distributor. They typically don't care about the turbine wheel itself, just the cartridge itself. So what happens is when you send in the cartridge, it will cost 399.99 + your old CHRA to get a reman'd CHRA. More than likely it will not be a new cartridge. If its a non-Garrett compressor cover, make sure you take it off, and send it in without that cover, or they may not accept the warranty.

Yeah that's exactly what I figured it was, thanks for the explanation too. I'm going to try and give them a call tomorrow and go from there. Do you think I should just take the cartridge? The exhaust housing is an original Garrett (Jet Hot coated though) but the compressor might not be (came with my PowerLab turbo kit).

Contact these guys, they're great guys and have been in the business since 1968. They will rebuild just about any turbo you give them. I brought them a Greddy 18g that had shaft play, they said it would cost around $250 to rebuild depending on the problem. They opened it up, checked it, tightened something down, re-assembled it, and gave it back to me. The guy said here you go, so I asked, "How much?" He said, "Nothing." He fixed it and didn't even charge me. I believe he was either the Manager or the owner's son, can't remember which.

Re: Garrett CHRA Exchange Program, GT35R
I spoke with Mike @ Turbos Direct about an hour ago and he told me they can do the exchange for $425 as long as the cartridge meets there specifications… so we’re headed down to Glendale tomorrow! iA everything will go smooth!

I would like to know how you discovered this damage. It looks like a fair amount of material came off that blade.

Re: Garrett CHRA Exchange Program, GT35R
I’m installing a built motor in my G35, so since the engine was apart I was also adding a few extras pieces including an Exhaust Backpressure Sensor from ProEFI… so, to install the backpressure sensor I had to take the turbo apart and drill a hole in the exhaust housing and when I separated the exhaust housing from the cartridge I noticed the damage.
