Fuel/Engine managment for beginner?
I am contemplating doing a simple little turbo project for fun, and I have read as much as I could on HMT, the FAQ here, and on line in general. I have a pretty good idea for what parts I'm going to need, but I still have one part of the project that I have no idea how I'm going to do: What do I need to do engine management/ fuel delivery wise to compensate for having a turbo? I have heard much talk about stand alone systems, and things like "turbo-edit" being casually tossed around, but this is the first time I am building a turboed engine, so I am completely clueless. I want something that will be safe, easy to set up, and inexpensive. An independant Honda mechanic in my city is running 7 psi on a turbo off a Dodge Daytona ( probably a mitsu blower?) on a 87' Prelude Si, and his only modifications to the fuel delivery system is an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. I like the kind of set up he has: Very simple, few parts, and somewhat reliable (from what I've seen). Is this an OK thing to do? Or this this guy a complete cheap *** with a rigged set up? This setup doesn't have to be fast (maybe low 15s?), it's just to get my feet wet in the world of turbo Hondas.
TIA.
TIA.
#1 - Chipped ECU
#2 - Larger injectors (370cc - 550cc for low boost setup)
Those two are highlg recommended and they way most will tell you to go.
A larger fuel pump, possibly and adjustable FPR are good add-ons as well to go for.
#3 and most important is going to be tuning.
I am a big advocate for the DIY tuning especially on a low boost / low budget setup.
Let me know if you need any tuning advice/supplies

Thanks for the advice man, I really appreciate it. I'll try to keep you guys updated when I source a good car (most likely ef hatch, we'll see), and start scouring junkyards for turbo parts.

For that mechanic, I'd have to say is a half-assed setup. From what I know, only the Prelude Si had fuel injection for those years, the rest had sidedraft carbs. I couldn't think why a carb would need a fpr, since they usually have fuel bowls insead. That tells me he's probably used to knock by now, or at least limited to under 220whp, the limit for 310cc injectors with just high fuel pressure. Its probably a check valve for the MAP sensor and an FMU, which he probably calls an FPR.
Anyways, get bigger (450-650cc) injectors and look into Crome (pgmfi.org forum). With the $150 version, its very easy to set up yourself, asuming you have a wideband o2, a laptop, and a good idea how to make a basemap (fuel & timing). Uberdata can do the same relative things, but its free and filled with issues that make using it a pain. Uber is like a really old carb - it will work, but not great unless you spend a shitload of time futzing with it.
Otherwise, try Hondata and have someone tune it. A local guy sells the s200 cheap ($3-400?) and tunes it for just $200.
TIA.
