Default FMIC color

I know there was a discusion on here a few weeks back about being able to paint your intercooler (black) without decreasing performance. I can't find it.

So...whats the deal? Do you have to use a very light coat and special paint? Or can you ONLY anodize it? etc...

Thanks

I did a search a while back on this through the old h-t threads. After reading most of them i pretty much got the consensis that aslong as your not pouring paint into the fins or the entanks your good to go. A few very light coats wouldnt hurt anything. I was plannin on painting mine when i got it to.

I believe an FMIC painted black looks really good.

Like mentionned above, aslong as you don't actually pour paint into the finds, you should be more than fine. Little light coats will suffice.

i used flat black paint on my ic to match my car. alot of people ask why i dont have an intercooler on my car. then i point it out to them and they are like "DOH*. just dont fill up the fins with paint and youshould be fine. or if you are blingin and want to disipate some more heat you might want to look into the swanetech thermo coats.

spray it at an angle so it isn't going onto the inner parts of the fins themselves

I can only go by commmon sense, I don't have any hard scientific evidence to back this up. But think about it, paint is putting an extra level of stuff inbetween the air and the aluminum, remember aluminum is used for it's ability to transfer heat...

Annodizing is more expensive, but IMHO worth it.

I've heard of ppl stretching a black pantyhose over the IC, and then put a grill insert, see what happens...

How much is anodizing? Is an intercooler something too big to DIY?

Its rediculous! Your right. It really bothers me that Im always on edge when i see a cop. I'm always worrying. It kills me. I wanna move out but im in college. I love cars too much to let them kill my passion and drive around in a stock car.

You can make your own grill craft look for about 2.50$... You can paint it whatever color floats your boat and there is NO loss to performance whatsoever.. Plus-- it looks better than most painted ICs..

Be smart-- if you move out of Cali someday or try to sell the IC- the paint will kill you..
