Default extreme nitrous setup qusetions.

First of all, this is only in the FI section because you guys have a good understanding of detonation! Z6motor, direct port system. car will be driven daily. raced on weekends!

my first question is...
#1)in order to run huge amounts of nitrous, i will obviously need forged pistons and rods. does the compression ratio matter like a turbo car, in controlling detonation?? i dont know what c.r. to use for my specific application? 300-350 shot!
#2)i know i am supposed to retard my timing about two degrees for each 50hp of nitrous. what device will allow me to retard on the fly?
#3)rumor say piston rings will go extremely fast on a n2o equipt car, true?
#4)when will the loss in power due to retard overcome the gain by n2o?XhpSHOT?

I think your nitrous numbers are a bit extreme. One of my friend's has his built LSVTEC motor (GE sleeved and running JE 10.5:1 slugs) and he's planning on running 200-250shot but it's going to have to be either staged or progressive. Have fun hooking up too, he's running 80shot dry right now and it still breaks third loose faster than some of our high boost turbo cars. Most of the MSD digi boxes will allow you to retard your timing under certain conditions but a full standalone EMS which we use to control nitrous is FAST. Then you can just set yourself a target A:F and fine tune everything else. You really need to lower your expectations and consider what is resonable. Tuning is everything with nitrous and most will come from reading your plugs. Just my $0.02

As Adam has stated my motor is built for nitrous. Ran 11.9 @ 117 last week with 70 shot. Just barely hooks with 24.5x8s.....1.6 60 foot. Gonna try to get a 100 shot to hook off the line here soon.....kinda doubtfull but I have to try. I need to know how much to set the initial percentage on my progressive controller at. As for the piston rings...the same rules for turbo apply. The deal with ignition retard....Nitrous oxide accelerates the combustion process and makes it a longer event. Thats why you have to retard the timing. The more nitrous you use the more retard you need. You wont be loosing power by retarding the timing, so long as you are using nitrous. Also when the amount of nitrous increases, so does the need for knock resistance...high octane fuel and/or rich mixtures.

BTW regarding the whole hitting hard and breaking the tires loose.....DUH....theres a 100hp increase from 4k rpm to 5k and the torque peak is shortly there after. Nitrous makes gobs and gobs of torque.

Can you tell me your basic setup, and your vehicles weight please? Thanks.

It's just an 84mm LSVTEC running JE 10.5:1 slugs, Eagle rods, and a stock PR3 cylinder head with SK2ST1 cams all in his EH2 (~2300lbs. with him). Nitrous + Spencer =

I have a fully built lsvtec with 9.1 83mm pistons . Ring gaps are 22thou and 20thou. I retarded the timing 6 degrees for a 80shot. I launch at 2000rpm and spray. 24.5 x 8 slicks with 5.5 lbs for a 1.6 60ft and 11.6 at 116mph. now I have progressive box and a 120 shot. I haven't used it yet but for example the box is programmed to engage .002 after full throttle at 60 percent and builds to 100 percent in 2.5 secs. I'm sure that I'll change. Good Luck.

I'm running 11.5~ compression. Forged pistons and rods, custom cam (.400 lift, 262 duration) and I'm spraying a NOS "50" shot as in 34 nitrous jet 20 fuel jet. It made 65 more at the wheels over what I have NA on the dyno Saturday. I'm only running one step colder plugs and 93 octane. Build an engine with a bit more compression and run a lower nitrous shot. With huge nitrous shots, alot can go wrong quickly. Clogged fuel jets, greater pump requirements, etc... Just my .02
