Default engine building for turbo. help please

i'm not planning on doing any crazy engine work such as boring, sleeving, valves, lower comp pistons, rods etc but heard that lowering compressions should be the first priority. is this true? i heard that you can get thicker than oem gaskets to lower comp. slightly any thought on this? also, any guidelines on how to build the more to be fairly reliable in the most inexpesive way? thanx
