Engine Block Paint. Does it work?
I have seen the "high temp" engine block paint at the auto parts stores and I'm wondering, does it hold up? I just got my block back from the machine shop and it's been cleaned, but I wouldn't mind painting it, but I sure dont want to do it if its gonna peel off because of the temperature extremes. Does anyone have any experience with block paint? Any specific brands? Should I just stay away from it altogether? BTW, this engine will be turbo, that's why I posted here, but this is sort of a general engine question.

Yea it works.. Just make sure you get a high temp paint.. If you want to be sure it doesnt peel off then you should use a primer of some sort. I have a "cast aluminum" paint that makes the block all nice and new looking and i didnt not use primer and it is holding up fine.

I used high-temp Duplicolor aluminum spary paint on my block. It's held up quite well actually, 3 years and going.

So no chips or flaking then? Does it hold up to oil and gas?

You have to watch out for primers, just make sure they are high heat. I personally would suggest not using a primer. I have painted blocks in the past and have not had a problem with them chipping. Unless you drop a header on the block, you will be fine. You really don't have to wrench around the block to much.

Well I keep my engine bay pretty clean so it doesn't have much chance to get oil and gas on it, but I've changed headgaskets a couple times and it held up fine with the water and oil that got on it.
I was trying to see if I had any good pics, but this is the best I have. You can kind of see the block, this is after about 2-3 years.

I painted my block with high-temp engine paint right after I got it back from the machine shop. It's been about a year now and the paint is still holding up great. The block is dirty but the paint is not chipping or anything.

I used the Duplicolor aluminum color paint, I don't remember the part number right now, but it turned out awesome (IMO) and has lasted quite a while.

Re: Engine Block Paint. Does it work? (Mr. Helsinki)
I use the brand that Eastwood sells, but I am sure they are all pretty similar. Just keep in mind that, as with any paint job, the prep work makes all the difference in the world. Use a pre-paint cleaner that does not leave a residue and will remove all traces of grease, oil, etc. before you spray.
Best of luck with your project.

I used that on one of my set-ups about 5 years ago. It looks great in the beginning... but it gets dirty easily. Plus if this is the same stuff... it's not chemical resistant.
For all motor purposes it's ok... but for FI I wouldn't use it. The WG dumptube makes everything nasty and theres no way to clean the block off without ruining the paint. From now on I polish my blocks (media tumble). It makes the blocks look like new and parts cleaner will remove any dirt/oil/etc.
