EGT Gauge Question
I traded a member on this board a EGT gauge a couple months back, but things been so hectic only now I got around to having it installed. I took it to my buddies shop and left the EGT & Oil pressure gauge there to get installed. my buddy calls me later when they get to my car and tells me . . . .
my EGT Gauge is missing a "black box" and another piece like the piece that is suppose to be tapped into the manifold or something like that.
I need to know if my EGT gauge needs a black box or not because the previous owner said that " It Did Not" need a black box and they ran it how it is right now.
I currently have the Autometer Phantom Series #5743
my buddy said they couldn't install it, but there was someone on here who told me some of the EGT's gauges do require a "black box" and some that do a few weeks back. So my oil pressure gauge is in and my EGT gauge is awaiting installation once I figure out if I need these parts or not.

yes some of the older autometer guages needed the "black box" which is not available anymore from autometer.. you can search ebay and i have seen a couple of them in the past.. i have a guage that needs the black box and it is not hooked up for that reason.. im waiting untill i get more money saved up and just get all new guages i think...

is there a way to tell if you need the black box or not? Everyone I have asked on AIM say I don't need a black box.

I need help people so far most all people said "NO" on the black box, 1 guy told me the older models used them but autometer does not make them anymore so either gottah find a used one or get a new gauge, and the new gauges don't use them . . .
question is how can I tell if I got a new or old gauge?

I guess the question is what year is considered old and what is considered new? I am not sure if mine is 2003 or what.

Re: EGT Gauge Question (beepy)
yeah I think calling autometer would be the best way to get the job done in finding out since I am kinda getting mixed answers and what not.

take a picture of the back of the guage, normally you dont need a black box unless its old. you do need the probe though, scammer.

i'll try to get that picture for you as soon as possible. My digi cam broke so that poses as a problem :-p MY gauge looks just like that one on there site, and even on their website it doesn't say anything about a black box. I saw a Autometer EGT on ebay with a black box, but i'll try and get that pic since that will help.
WHat do you need to see on the back that way I can tell you if it's there or not? I do also have the probe.

Re: EGT Gauge Question (Vtec92Civic)
On the back of my egt I had 2 sets of wire(one set for light,the other for power). Then there was two screws that held down wires coming from the probe. My egt didn't need the black box.

Re: EGT Gauge Question (twkdCD595)
hey thanks a million guys! WHat I got is 2 sets of wires . . . .
one set that is connected to the light bulb just to illuminate the gauge, and then the 2nd set of wires is a group of 3 wires:
green
brown
red
I don't think I need a black box, but i'm double checking so that I can tell my friend that I don't need it and to install the gauge because I need the gauge to help make sure things are good.
could it be maybe one ground wire, and the other 2 wires for the probe or something?
just trying to make sure as best as possible because I don't want them to charge me an arm and a leg and not be able to get the gauge to work if you catch my drift.

Re: EGT Gauge Question (Vtec92Civic)
they make 2 different kinds.one reds more accuratly then the other.the one with the black box IS better and is suppose to read faster and more accuratly.
the one WITHOUT the black box will only have 3 wires coming out of it,red,black and white.then it will have to studs w/ nuts that you put the probe wires on and tighten down.If you say that you have 5 wires coming out of it with no studs,then you NEED the black box.
take a pic of the back of your unit if you can.

Re: EGT Gauge Question (Vtec92Civic)
this is the back of mine,it does not need a black box
white/black = bulb
red=power
black=ground
yellow/red=probe
yellow/red is connected to the 2 studs that tighten down,if yours does not look like this then it needs the box.
