Default EEs help....traction control idea.

Alright so TOO has traction control on some of his cars that seems to work good.

They all work off of the same princaple. Using wheel speed sensors (ABS) compare the speed of the rear wheels to the speed of the front wheels. If the front wheels move faster than the rears by an adjustable amount then do something.

On his SCed ITR he opens the bypass valve and lowers boost...a fantastic idea.
On his civic he cuts spark.

Now for the life of me I can't think of lowering boost enough to fix traction w/ a turbo without overspinnging the turbo. You'd have to open the wastegate somehow.

But what you can still do is cut spark. I have a MSD soft revlimiter which pulls spark from alternate cylinders. Would this be safe for a turboed car? Or could the gas still ignite once outside of the cylinder?

Also, and EE's know how to make the circutry to run this thing? You need something that can compare the voltage (or is it frequency) of the wheelspeed sensors and when fronts exceed rear by amount (using a dial would be good) it sends out a voltage which would run whatever.

Opinions, idea, flames?

Very good idea, makes me wish I had ABS

The ABS sensors output a frequency, I believe...the easiest thing to do would be to convert the frequencies to voltages and compare them. All the MSD "pills" are just resistors, so you wouldn't even need the two step, just something to momentarily raise the resistance so that the rev limit is lowered...how you would do that is beyond me at the moment...I'm sick, can't think

For what it's worth. v1.0 of the AEM EMS has traction control. It looks
at your vehicle speed sensor, and activates if the change in the voltage
exceeds defined limits.

a better, although less accurate idea (better becuase not everyone has ABS) is to use a g-tech pro type accelerometer and compare that to the speed sensor... i actaully did an engineering project on this exact topic 3 years ago. I can try to find my files if you are really interested.

I believe the way the EMS traction control will work is to log max acceleration in each gear without wheelspin and input that data into tables according to gear then the software will be able to tell when the limit of max acceleration is exceeded and turn on a ignition retard. the only problem i see is being able to log max acceleration for the lower gears. seems like it would have to be done on a dyno with slicks for some of the real high horsepower cars or the ever reliable trial and error.

Has anyone experimented with the traction control in the AEM EMS? I just ordered my EMS and curious how well it works

not likely since aem hasn't released the new firmware/software for current users, v 1.0 is only shipping with new units and they don't have base maps out yet either.
