Default dump tube length

besides heat in the engine bay, is there any performance lost by having a short dumptube or not having one at all???

It should be long enough to route wastegate gases well away from your intake, ideally down toward the oil pan. Too short of a dump tube, or none at all, and you risk exhaust gases getting into your intake charge and your hp numbers will suffer greatly.
