do you really need a BOV
is it really vital to have a BOV when running low boost (10 pounds or less) or is it just for that ricer effect?
Take it easy guys.. this is what H-T is about helping the people in need and educating the less knowlegable.. YES it would be smart to get even a cheap BOV.. they run from $99-$300 which is not alot of money. and there are many to chose from

FYI, a LOT of stock turbo cars DO NOT have BOVs, my first Zcar, before any modifications had only a 'pop-off" valve to relieve the pressure during a catastrophic boost surges. my first mod? welding it shut and raising boost to 10PSI.

yes FYI alot of the older turbo cars did not have a BOV... but the newer cars like the eclipse from 1990-1998 some some others did come with some kinda of BOV.
BOVs from first Gen DSMs work great if money is kinda tight. You can usually pick them up for $35-50 with the flange that you'll need to weld to the IC pipe.

Did you do a search?
Yes, you need one, unless you love the sound of compressor surge.
Do you want your turbo to last, or take a **** on you?
Peace

Actually I dont think you really need a bov. Turbo charging has been around for a long time now. Bov's are recent addition to the market. Some feel its just anouther gimic or part to sell and make money. When you shift and let off the gas, the air will go back, but when you crack the throttle open the surge will stop right away as gasses hit the turbine wheel. Personaly id say run a bov, but I really dont think its needed.
Yes turbocharging has been around for a LONG time . but that was then and this is now. Technonlogy has stepped in and inventors not only trying to make $$$$ but have created some kind of gimic or parts to better and lenghten the life of any turbo or motor itself.Denpending on how much boost you are running. It is a DEFINTE MUST.. has anyone put there hand in front of a bov at 9 psi, reving the motor at no LOAD. there a a heavy force of air that would usally surge back to the turbo.some times even pipes pop off at higher number of boosting.I have persoanlly seen throttle bodie butter flys bend on certain cars. imagine on load at 7000-8000RPM.I would pay $50-200 on a BOV and it also comes with some cool noise then to spend $$$ rebuilding motors and turbos.
Compressor surge actually sounds better than a blow-off valve u know.. (seriously!!) - its twice as loud as any blow-off i've ever heard.. and for those of you wondering what it sounds like.. just imagine a Greddy Type-R blow-off valve, releasing 1.2 bar of boost, but cooler sounding
